Angels and Demons in Art (A Guide to Imagery)

While this is an interesting compilation of angels and demons in art, it is incomplete. There are several key pieces of art that are completely missing and deemed not worthy of mentioning by the author or editors.The images are poorly reproduced, and so small as to leave me wondering if I was able to interperet the art for myself, or just left be told what I'm supposed to think it means. The orginization of the chapters is well done, even though it roughly follows the biblical presentation of such.Within seconds of opening the cover, I felt as if it was writing down to the reader. The inane descriptors targeting key points in the presented art work are reminiscent of a children's television show presenting colours and alphabet to pre-school children.If you are looking for a Cliff's notes book for art interpretation, or a religious education course, this might be a passable resource for one term paper or reference for further research. I personally wouldn't use it as a resource for teaching or writing beyond those means.

Sorry to be a shill, but this book is just good. It's worth it. Of all of this series, and not to the disenfranchisement of the rest, this one is worth it.The series at large edges at a 4/5 though.

I would be hard pressed to see any difference between the copy we received and a new one. The book itself is outside my area of expertise but my wife finds it useful in her work as an artist. The book arrived when promised and the price represented a substantial savings over even Amazon's discounted price.

the content of this book appears to be good unfortunately the book itself is a small format. The publisher made the mistake of spanning some images across two pages which results in a good portion of the image content being lost in the center binding. very disappointing.

Dissapointing how small the book is. The content is good but many of the pieces of art are incredibly detailed and those details are hard to make out. Never thought to check size before purchasing because usually art books are larger for that very reason. Otherwise the book is pretty good.

Bought this for my daughter who has a history degree. She was thrilled to receive it, saying she liked the historical content.

This is useful book that covers a wide range of material. It is not exhaustive in the information it provides, but it is not intended to be. Instead it is an effective introduction to these topics and is a good jumping off point for further research. The small image sizes could be a problem for some, but in many cases larger images can be found via Google. I love this book.

Excelente libro, muy completo, didáctico con excelentes referencias y ejemplos. Resulta muy útil como título introductor para quién busque investigar someramente la iconografía cristiana referente a representaciones de estos personajes.

it is a brilliant book full of so much detail and history. Brilliant to know how we got to where we are in artistic form and why we think angels and devils look the way they do. However, the book is small. it is a shame as if in A4 it would be outstanding. I suppose if a real art critic you could take it with you to a gallery.

This provides some really useful explanations of artistic traditions in the portrayal of the Christian spirit world.The main weakness is the size of the plates. The reproductions of works simply do not do a lot of the originals justice.
