very informative and up to date
I really appreciated the thoughtful video clips that added to the content of this texts, as well as the inclusion of current and practical research. I would recommend to any early grades teachers looking to strengthen knowledge of teaching literacy to our youngest readers and writers.

Common sense perspective of phonics
I was thrilled when I first saw Heidi Anne Mesmer's new book. I felt confident a foreword by Nell Duke meant that it would reflect a common sense view of the topic. I realized that my instincts were accurate from the first pages. Heidi has written a clear and focused view of the role and function of phonics with step by step suggestions that will help teachers put it into action. With so many misconceptions around the topic of phonics, this book has never been more needed. I am thrilled to endorse this wonderful book and delighted that it will be in the hands of teachers who will then apply Heidi's research-based suggestions in their classrooms.

hard to follow - reading teacher review
I have taught reading for over 8 years in a public school setting and this book is very hard to follow if you are looking to teach your child to read at home. It is also not easy to follow if you are teaching an entire class. While the information is accurate, the flow of the book is completely disjointed. It does give very in depth explanations for the why behind the teaching, so it is helpful in that way. I have purchased SO many learn to read, phonics sets, phonics books, etc and so far the easiest to follow has been from Learning Dynamics.

Several pages in the book were printed on folded or crinkled pages. Makes it difficult to read.
Problems with print, small folds in the paper.
