A medium weight euro-game, with awesome dinosaurs
This an a solid 60-75 minute game of area control.Play overviewTriassic Terror is an area control game where you are attempting to have more dinosaurs on the board (and in better locations) than your opponents.During one turn of the game (the game has between 6 and 9 total turns depending on the number of people playing) each player takes one of six possible "turn action" tiles. The first player to choose the tile rotates on each turn, which is a key feature of the game because the last person to choose has very little choice of which tile they are going to take. This is particularly true in the six player game, because the last player has to take the last "turn action" tile. Each player then gets to take their action, which will be dictated by whichever card they chose. Turn actions vary between hatching more dinosaurs on the board and attacking opponents' dinosaurs.Scoring takes place after a few turns, and a player's score is based on which areas their dinosaurs inhabit. If they have the largest herd in a specific area, they typically get more points. If they have a herd that has spread across all geographies on the board, they get points as well. There are three times in which scoring happens in the game and in those times player tokens are moved around the outside of the board, where the scoring track is located. (This is similar to Ticket to Ride where the scoring track surrounds the board.)First ImpressionsWhen I unboxed this game, I thought "wow, this is a lot of pieces".The inside of the box is well laid out (this reminded me of Fantastiqa, where all of the pieces have a home inside the box) and so instead of being left with a pile of random components, you have a well organized set of pieces. The photos I have attached show just how many components come inside the box. Each player has a herd of dinosaurs (and round dinosaur discs which represent three dinosaurs). In addition to this, each player has two larger dinosaur pieces, and there are three dinosaurs which roam the game board. The board itself is double sided, and each side is lavishly illustrated. The board is heavy and glossy, so will stand up to a lot of use.Gameplay reviewTriassic Terror has lavish components, but plays like a euro. There is no luck in this game at all, and you can play in a measured way as you try to calculate how many points you will achieve after each time the herd is scored. When I started playing this game, I wasn't thinking "euro" (because the pieces look vibrant, and there are dinosaurs thundering around the board). This was a mistake. This game is calculating, and each player has to strike a balance between growing their herd and attacking other herds.I have read reviews that state that this is an "extremely light" area control game. This is not accurate. I think that this is a solid medium-weight game. Once all players know how to play, gameplay should be 60-75 minutes.I think the ideal number of players for this game is 4-6. It is a vast board and so in my opinion doesn't play quite as well with 2 players. The Political Mastermind and I are going to try to play a 2 player game where we each control 2 colors, and choose 2 turn actions each; this may be a good solution for two players because the board will still be filled and competitive. If your group loves area control games, and you are looking for a game that will take a little over an hour but still give you a solid area control experience, I suggest checking out Triassic Terror. The gameplay largely has to do with attacking your opponents, so if you are looking for a euro-style game that has a lot of interaction, this is a good fit for that as well.Don't be distacted (as I was) when you open up the box and see fun dinosaur pieces. I was lulled into thinking this would be a light-weight game with a bit of a euro feel. This was not accurate. This game is a solid bit of euro-style area-control that takes 60-75 minutes depending on your game group.
