"I may have to kill her."
This collection contains volumes 5 and 6 of Witch Hunter (as originally published in Korea, US name has been changed to Witch Buster). There are a lot of interconnected, continually building stories in this manga. It's best to start reading at the beginning.A major offensive has been launched by a group of witches. Responding will cause some shake ups for the witch hunters, and the past will haunt several characters...This turned into a great set of volumes. Volume 5 is almost entirely devoted to a flashback giving background about one of the A-class witch hunters. It's a bit slow in parts but gets more and more interesting as it unfolds and manages some nice surprises that resonate through to the character's present. The volume ends on an incredible cliffhanger, briefly going from the flashback to a short jump forward from current events. Volume 6 returns to the Western District Center's response to the witches' offensive. A pair of intense battles are shown in parallel and a lot of intriguing set up is laid out for the next volume. The time jumps in this series are a bit too frequent, but they are used well to increase dramatic impact of certain plot reveals and it's always very easy to tell when a jump has occurred so it's a very minor issue. I like the character development and emerging subplots - everything is carefully executed and building nicely. There are some mythic overtones showing in the story that I didn't expect, but are used in an interesting way and effectively add extra layers to the plot by the connections and connotations implied.I'm really liking this series. There are a lot of layered sub-plots developing, and various factions' views, prejudices, and goals are carefully integrated with the main story. This also gives us a growing cast with several interesting new characters added and a fair number of intriguing twists and revelations. The pacing is excellent, as information is rationed out appropriately without slowing the story down or diminishing the level of action (which is copious, well done and a lot of fun).Witch Hunter is an engrossing read and is showing no signs of slowing down. Looking forward to more.
