Review: A Great Game with an Emphasis on Excellent Mechanics - I’ve tried to think about how to describe/classify this game. Here’s my best attempt: an open-world, free-running, adventuring brawler with a unique platforming twist. The TLDR: The game has challenging, but very fun mechanics that are intended to be mastered. For me this was the point of the game: it’s fun to play. If you like challenging and highly manual mechanics that are super effective once learned, this game is for you. If you prefer a bit more automation in your mechanics and enjoy other parts of a game besides the controls and mechanics, this may not be for you. The Expanded Analysis: Whether you’re in a challenge, a mission, or just messing around, it is a blast to run, fly, and slide around the world in this game. The adventure is really fun and is filled with enjoyable and challenging combat. The gravity control mechanic is really cool and makes for some unique open-world platforming. What I love most about this game is the mechanics. That is the emphasis of this game: it’s fun to play and fun to learn. Sure, the story is fine, the game is nice to look at, etc., etc., etc.; but, the point of this game is its gameplay (my personal favorite thing in a game). This may be good or bad for each individual. In a game like Assassin’s Creed, free-running in the open world is fairly automated. Sure, there’s jumping and gadgets to control, but, for the most part, you hold down the ‘free-run’ button and much is taken care of. Even in combat there’s a fair amount of scripting and automation. That is very different in Gravity Rush: you have to control much more of your free-running (or free-flying) and auto-targeting is limited in combat. This may please some and displease others. In that way, Gravity Rush reminds me indirectly of Shadow of the Colossus in that the controls feel very manual. This is true of many Japanese games that have a focus on mechanics (i.e., the latest PS3 Gundam game). You feel very in control, but it takes some patience to learn and master the mechanics. There’s not a lot of hand-holding with these mechanics either. There are a bunch of challenges (my favorite part of the game) that teach you the mechanics and how to handle certain situations (good combat combos, good platforming techniques, etc.), but they are not step-by-step tutorials: you have to discover what works by yourself in order to get gold medals in the challenges. This allows you to create your own unique play style even if you end up doing things the creators clearly intended. The game has plenty of content, has an enjoyable quest, has fun side missions (my favorite part), looks and runs great on Vita, and is a blast to pay. I highly recommend it, but I also recommend people be aware of the existence of intentionally manual and challenging (but satisfying!) mechanics.
Review: Awesome experience with minor hiccups - This game is simply put AWESOME. Mechanics work great, visuals are beautiful, sounds are nice, storyline/telling is catchy.. I played about 6 hours and I guess I am midway through the story but I've been lingering around the city looking for things. It keeps me entertained and I love this game. A few things to mention NOT as CONS for this game, may be taken as "expect from it": -This isn't a FULL hack 'n slah game: You have a set/combo of attacks on the ground, an attack in midair, and special powers. This is basically untrully a button smasher since you WONT beat the game pressing square only, but is not IN DEPTH as other big games.. still this is enough for this world and its correct use can avoid you some "you died" [or game over]. You can and have, however, UPGRADES. There are for attack power, gravity gauge depletion times and recharge, special power, etc.. Gems collected around the world and as rewards are use for these purpose. -Vita features extensive use: Touch screen and tilting the VITA is present in the game and the way its done IS EXCELLENT. I don't know if you can turn these off, but I didn't care since I want to experience this game as it should be. They work great BUT you need to put your mind to it to master. -Story telling: It uses a comic-like depiction in the main story line, but beware.. YOU CANT REWIND these frames [I tried but not sure if you can see them again..] so pay good attention and also, tilting the VITA gives it a really nice touch of 3Dish effect. -Just, but JUST A TINY BIT of lag: There is a bit of lag present, not gonna lie. You will find it when "trying again" the challenges. Reloading the challenge takes about 8-12 seconds [longest for me was 14], a bit more than the usual not so bothering regular loading times in the game.. ALSO, you might experience a screen freeze lag when "flying" fast[you actually are falling since you changed the gravity direction LOL] moving to a different town [loading textures, changing music, rendering stuff is my bet], this minuscule freeze lag is less than a second BUT is very obvious since ALL around is moving hehe. -*You MIGHT get a bit frustrated when exploring irregular areas of the world [bottom of city, around many walls] and might have a bit of problems with the gravity focusing and camera at the same time. You can reset your camera so its a bit easier to get a grip of where you are going and are.. This is a great game for the vita. I love it and I am taking my time with it and so should any and everyone :P
