Update: Big Upgrade
UPDATE: I upraded helmets from the Bell Qualifier DLX which has a mesh/fabric flap that covers the speakers, to a Shoei RF-SR that places the speaker directly on your ear without it being covered. The speakers sound AMAZING, very clear and bassy, and I don't have to turn the volume up as much now. Definitely make sure it's not your helmet or the positioning first.I have the Cardo Spirit HD with 40mm speakers, and decided I'd upgrade to these for better sound quality and hopefully volume. If you already have the Spirit HD speakers, these are not an upgrade. They're quieter, the sound profiles are somehow worse (less bass,) and the price just isn't worth it. They do have slightly crisper sound at lower volumes, but I would recommend just keeping the HD speakers, they're about the best you're gonna get from Cardo. If you're upgrading from other speakers, these ARE good, they aren't low quality at all, and the sound is clear. It gets muddy at high volume, but most other speakers probably do that. I think the price would be worth it if I was upgrading from lower quality speakers.

Best Speakers All Around
Installed these speakers in my Simpson helmet and compared to the other speakers I’ve tried, this one has the best quality I’ve ever experienced. Especially important for me being as my bike is too loud so it easier to hear the music.

Don’t have to use with Cardo
Solid speakers. Can be used on anything with a headphone jack, but sounds best with a FIIO BTR5. I first tried with a cheap Bluetooth receiver (see pic) and it sounded thin and barely loud enough to hear over my bike, more annoying than enjoyable. Then I added a cheap inline headphone amp (see pic) based on a review for these speakers.. it increased the volume but still sounded like a tin can and would distort at the desired volume. No bueno. I then semi-splurged on the BTR5 and lemme tell ya….. it’s the real deal. Doesn’t have the full thump of high-end over ear headphones that create a seal around your ears, but it definitely sounds amazing. Maybe better than my Beats Fit Pro earbuds. The EQ settings are nice. Speaker placement directly over the ears is important. These speakers can sound really good but you need a quality BT receiver/amplifier to drive them. I dunno how the Cardo unit compares, it could be awesome too, but I’be heard varying reviews and I didn’t want to deal with the intercom stuff.

I was hoping they were not better then the Sena Speakers. They are!
I did the comparison in a Shoei GT Air and they fit the pockets perfectly with my ears. Wired into the 3.5 forward facing plug using no adapter the wiring looks good. Getting the original Sena plug out took a little more effort then anticipated. The Cardo JBL's probably won't fit some helmets as they are slightly larger in diameter then the Sena speakers and in some helmets you cant fit the Senas for that matter. I spent a lot of time getting the original SenaS Speakers in the ideal location and adding a little more velcro to get them closer to my ears. In the house with the helmet on I had to turn down the Senas as they were a touch too loud, the same with the Cardo JBLs. As I usually ride with the Senas at full I phone X and Sena Volume I was surprised. I did the riding comparison on a Yamaha Tenere and what I found is the Cardo JBl speakers sounded surprisingly good at legal highway speeds. The only problem is that if you live where 75 is legal they won't sound as good as at 65. I used the Tenere because it is not super quiet or super loud compared to the naked and the full fairing bikes I also ride. So on a quiet bike I believe they will definitely sound better then the Senas and lets say you are riding at 90+ they could sound better then the Senas as well, in my opinion less tinny, but who speeds?. As I have several helmets with Sena docks the decision is how many to upgrade . When I am riding long distances and stopping only every couple hundred miles for fuel I still prefer earbuds that I have encased in rubber molding and a Balaclava for comfort. Helmet speakers are nice for convenience and some people prefer their comfort but for the best sound in my opinion you can't beat earbuds, I have not tried the iASUS X3 but helmet noise, which varies from helmet to helmet, vents open or closed or non existent, is hard to block with a speaker, in any case just make sure you can hear those sirens! I have to go on a long ride to test battery life comparison on the JBL's but I do not anticipate them draining the battery much more then the Sena speakers.

Awesome
Great sound I don't use these with a Cardo system I actually use with a Bluetooth emitter (TROND Bluetooth 5.2 Transmitter Receiver, 2-in-1) found on amazon and utilize the audio for music and maps while riding.

Not really an “upgrade” but sort of
I bought these because I already had the Packtalk Neo. I purchased a second helmet kit and figured, why not buy the 45mm speakers vs the 40mm ones that come with the packtalks. Compared to the 40mm JBL HD speakers that come with the packtalks, there is no noticeable difference. Sitting completely still in a quiet room the quality of the 45mm is MAYBE 3-5% better than the 40mm. However the 40mm has better bass and is a bit louder. To anyone out there wanting to upgrade, if you already have the JBL 40mm HD speakers that come with a lot of the newer cardos, save your $90 they are not worth it. If you’re purchasing these as an upgrade for any other speakers, older ones or just purchasing them as a standalone, I would say they’re good speakers. Just not worth the money for the upgrade if you already have the 40mm ones. That being said the 40mm JBLs are only $50 so if you want to save a couple bucks, go with those and you will get 97% the same headphone as these.
