Uh oh….missing pages
I was excited in receiving this book. Great information for each age 4-14 year olds.My book for some reason when bound by the publisher is missing pages 126-175 (10-14 year olds). Unfortunately it is the age group I needed. I will need to return with the hope of receiving the book with all of the pages.

It is an easy read with each age broken down into a couple ...
I gave this book to all of my student teachers and each of my own children with children. It is an easy read with each age broken down into a couple of pages written in bullets. (Easy to keep in the bathroom for quick intake of information....you don't have entire chapters to read.) It gives a quick snapshot of where a child is developmentally, socially, etc. and what is expected of a child at each grade level. I believe it is helpful for both parents and teachers in understanding what to expect (or what not to expect) from children at various levels of development. Remember that children develop at different rates, so read the age just before your child's age and just after your child's age to get a better picture. A handy and informative book.

Helpful Guidelines to your child's behavior
We were originally given this book when my stepson was a toddler and have found it useful enough that we now purchase it for friends. The chapters are set up by age so it is easy to jump to the age you wish to read about. First we found the information helpful to understand some of the behaviors and things my stepson would do. You know, those moments when you wonder, "what was he thinking?" Now we read the next year ahead so that we can get a feel for how he may behave or react to things. Since it is also a guide for teachers the book also gives suggestions on where your child's developments and interests may lie; including their social behavior with peers and adults. We would recommend this to book anyone interested in understanding their child's behavior.

This has been a useful book in my work as child and family therapist
This has been a useful book in my work as child and family therapist. I regularly use it to help parents understand what is to be expected -- or not expected -- of their children academically and socially at whatever age they are at. I do wish it were updated to take into consideration more recent research, particularly on how complex trauma, poverty, racism, sexism, and other adverse environments affect kids. But it is still useful as is.

Great resource
I bought this book for a field experience. I am studying to be an elementary school teacher, and I found this book to be extremely helpful. It gives a detailed account of "normal" behavior that you would see at different grade levels, to give you ideas of where students will be physically, emotionally, etc. I also think this would be a great resource for parents, if they want to get an idea of what to expect as their kid gets older, or see what "everyone else" is doing at their child's level. The author is very explicit in explaining that this book is not saying "this is where your child MUST be" but instead says "based on research, this is what we have found is often true". I would reccomend this book to parents and teachers.

Useful & Insightful
This book provides a useful "snapshot" of child development, year by year. The author's love and understanding of children truly shines through as he discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each age.The book is concise and easy-to-use, and has become one of the most frequently used books in my professional library.Teachers and administrators, this is a must have! It is especially helpful for teachers working with a new age group; administrators, "floaters" and substitutes who work with many age groups; and any professional looking for clear, concise information to share with families about the developmental needs of their children.Parents, too, will enjoy this book. While it focuses on the children in the classroom, the content will ring true at home, as well!
