Miss Kay's Duck Commander Kitchen: Faith, Family, and Food--Bringing Our Home to Your Table

👑 Her children shall rise up and call her blessed...👑
I've searched cookbooks and magazines for a while looking for a recipe for fried apple pies made in a skillet resembling one of my mom's favorite childhood memories from the Great Depression (the 1930s one) when there wasn't a lot to eat. No surprise to me that Miss Kay would not only have it but with instructions that match the stories of how my mom remembers watching them being made! And so many other yummy, easy recipes that I bought the real book as I do not trust my sloppiness to try to follow a recipe from my Kindle! I've loved and respected the Robertsons for years, they're our kind of people. God bless them all and Miss Kay for staying firm in their faith - and helping me surprise my mom! 👉❤👈

Very good condition
I was skeptical that it may be in rough shape considering its used, but it's immaculate. I've been wanting this cook book for years and I'm glad I finally have it.

Put on an apron or pull up a chair! Either way, COME ON IN!
Step into the Robertson clan's kitchen and home. Put on your apron and join in the cooking and lively chatter in the kitchen or lean up against the counter and sneakily snitch a bite or two when no one is looking; either way, come on in! There is probably a din of voices all talking at once and definitely laughter at someone's antics or tales. You are sure to get a joking poke in the ribs or an arm around your shoulders; whichever you need! Good aromas are wafting from the stove-top and oven causing tummies to rumble. Whatever you choose to do while you're in their kitchen you are welcome to join in. These folks believe in hospitality and are ready to welcome you, into their home and lives. Love lives there. For sure, they will treat you like one of the family. I hope we can handle it!I confess to not watching their popular television show and really know nothing about them. If you are like me, and know nothing about Miss Kay, the "faith" described on the cover of this lovely family contribution to all of us, is a Christian one. Faith can mean different things to different people. Just so you know: To the Robertson's, it means belief and trust in Jesus Christ. My review will speak to the "faith" and "personality" behind this compilation of Miss Kay's family recipes. While I agree that there are several recipes that sound tantalizing I got more of an insight into the lives of the Robertson family members from this book. If it was only a book of recipes or only a book about faith it wouldn't be what it is...I am so happy to meet these lovely people. Miss Kay shares her "famous" family's lives without shame. She is not embarrassed about the "bad and hard times" that some would hide in the closet or sweep under the rug. Gosh, I LOVE that. I can relate, because for sure and for certain; I've got memories of some hard and bad times of my own. Times when I'm not so proud of some things I was doing. I don't know if I would have the courage to speak so openly about them as the Robertson's have done--considering the world-wide spotlight that is upon them. When the Robertson's share some of their not-so-pretty experiences and the consequences they suffered; they do it to help those of us similarly suffering, as a wise warning not to do the same, and how to overcome and persevere. (Billy Graham once wrote to one of my loved-ones this advice: "You can't unscramble scrambled eggs. Start where you are." Now, maybe that is a common saying in the South as Billy is from North Carolina; I don't know, but it sure resonated with me!) (I'm from "out west" just newly arrived in beautiful NC.) Back to the Robertson's: they share their lives with us, perhaps at their own expense. However, they do not fear the judgment of people. I really admire that. I think people like the Robertson's are rare and that makes them even more valuable. Miss Kay gives more than a glimpse of perseverance and steadfastness. She shares how she puts her trust in Someone bigger than her problems and how that faith has proved reliable. She describes how the good Lord gives her peace. I'm inspired, truly. Some wise person said, and it stuck in my mind, "Learn from the mistakes of others because you won't have time to make them all yourself." A smart person out there probably knows who said this (or I could Google it but right now, I'm busy writing this review.) :o)As a heads-up to all y'all, each chapter begins with a Scripture that Miss Kay picked to introduce it. These verses speak to what God has said about: being thankful for Him and the people He has placed in our lives and what He expects of us regarding our treatment of these people; prayer for us and others; the love husbands and wives are to have for each other; not quitting in hard times; faithfulness; Jesus's love for children and how His love for them is ours to follow; hospitality; staying held together by love; mentoring and teaching others what we've learned; laziness; and taking care of widows and orphans. Also included at the beginning of each chapter are some wonderful quotes from other sources. An example is the very first one given: "We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout!" from June Carter Cash. I love that!I have a particular fondness for books like this. I have always longed for a family history like that the Robertson's share. I don't have a Granny that passed down time-worn family treasures and traditions from her heart and kitchen. So, I have adopted those from other's, made them my own, and am trying to pass them on myself. I want to leave a legacy behind when my life on this earth ends. When I cook for my loved ones all they know is that I made it and I'm presenting it with all my heart. The old things that are scattered throughout my home may not be my Gran's but they were somebody's grandma's! I'm starting from where I'm at. Thanks Billy and Miss Kay!Yes, this is marketed as a cookbook and there are oodles of recipes in it and maybe I won't make them all but when I do make one; I'll be thinking and smiling about the family from which they came! I hope that prior to buying this cookbook you will have read the numerous reviews that outline the contents of this amazing book so you'll know what you'll be getting. I read FYI's review (at the time of this writing it is the first review) and his/her review covers EVERYTHING I can think a person would need to know in advance! I stopped reading after FYI's review, (I'm sure there are others just as good!) so as not to be influenced in the writing of my own, and decided to share WHY this book works for ME (apart from the food.) It is more than a compilation of family recipes of good food; it is a testimony of faith in the Lord, examples of perseverance through whatever life throws at you, and love shared. The final quote in this book is from Linda Henley:"If God had intended us to follow recipes, He wouldn't have given us grandmothers!"Well, thank goodness Miss Kay has come along to give me a grandmother's instruction! I LOVE this inspirational and warm book!

A Scrumptious Collection of Authentic, Down-Home Louisiana Recipes
Miss Kay's family recipes are a delicious mix of traditional Southern dishes, with a lively dash of Louisiana Cajun thrown in, and generous servings of faith and love. The delightful matriarch of the Duck Commander dynasty is a gifted and artful cook. This beautifully designed book includes many fun photographs and is easy to use. The whole Robertson clan contributes recipes; it's a great read for both men and women. Miss Kay shares stories and sage advice, with techniques for creating the most delicious meals with easily prepared, classic Southern soul-food, like creamy macaroni & cheese (cheese melted on top, yum), buttermilk biscuits, and Lisa's pecan chicken. There are savory Cajun dishes like Willie's chicken strips, spicy brisket, and easy crawfish étouffée. Satisfying deserts are down-home good, including classic cookies, Phil's pralines, Miss Kay's famous banana pudding, and Jase's favorite sweet potato pie. This pie motivates him to put up Miss Kay's vast collection of Christmas decorations! Now, we can enjoy Miss Kay's cooking too; real food for real people. Miss Kay's Duck Commander Kitchen: Faith, Family, and Food - Bringing Our Home to Your Table gives inspiration on how folks can enrich their lives by making time to gather around the dinner table and create good memories. It's a book to treasure, and a great gift during the holiday season.A lot of thought went into this classy, friendly, easy to use, lovingly photographed, and downright hospitable cookbook. It's like a big, warm hug from Miss Kay. You'll feel welcomed into the circle of Miss Kay's family and friends, with fun stories and plentiful, practical, and delicious recipes. Each chapter begins with a story from Miss Kay, all the recipes include helpful notes. The beautiful layout and photos are a treat. The recipes consist of wholesome ingredients that are easily obtainable from any grocery store. Only a few recipes (towards the back of the book) call for wild game, and Miss Kay suggests easy substitutes if we lack access to this. For example, Miss Kay helpfully suggests substituting precooked rotisserie chicken for squirrel in "Boiled Squirrel & Dumplings," page 199. The resulting chicken & dumplings are savory and irresistible! The cookbook walks us through traditional dishes and deserts, easily incorporated into any home. Some of the Louisiana recipes call for a dash of Cajun seasoning, which can be any brand found locally. Or, you can look for Miss Kay's preferred kind here: Duck Commander Phil Robertson's Cajun Style Original Seasoning or Duck Commander Phil Robertson's Cajun Style Zesty Seasoning . The index at the back of the book is also useful. Chapters include:Cooking for PhilFeeding My BoysThe Women My Boys Love Learn to CookWhen the Grandkids Come OverCompany's ComingLouisiana at Its BestDinner on the GroundsMiss Kay's "Muffins and Mentoring" GroupOur Cajun ChristmasWild Game CookingRemembering GrannyMiss Kay's most important ingredients are her love, faith, and kindness, with gratitude for the gifts God provides. Measure for measure, the only thing greater than her delicious cooking is her charm, and that's saying something! The extended Robertson family and community of West Monroe, Louisiana, is blessed with Miss Kay, her beautiful spirit, and her delicious homemade cooking. We look forward to more stories from the upcoming The Women of Duck Commander: Surprising Insights from the Women Behind the Beards About What Makes This Family Work . Thank you Robertson clan for sharing your "good eatin'" and faith. You may also want to see the fun DVD with the Robertson clan cooking in The Commander's Kitchen ; a nice recipe pamphlet is enclosed, but you'll want to get the more extensive book reviewed here! As Phil says, "If you're a skinny little yuppie girl, this is the show you need, right here." Phil carefully shows how to fix several of his favorite specialties, along with dishes prepared by sons Alan, Willie, and Jep, kinfolk (Jay), Alan's lovely wife Lisa, and of course, Miss Kay! We love how little Miss Kay talks in that special way to her precious Bobo & J.J. (those smart Rat Terriers watch for precious scraps). So we wait in hope of a possible "Miss Kay with Bobo, J.J., and Pets" episode of Duck Dynasty , with her doing that unique dog-whisperer thing, like nothing else on earth! I also highly recommend Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life and Legacy as the Duck Commander , which we read aloud in the evenings from cover to cover. Enjoy!

Expected more
I expected much more from this recipe book. The stories are great, but that's not what I buy a recipe book for.

A taste of life with the Robertson Clan
My son is a massive Duck Dynasty fan he decided to buy (with my Amazon account?) two copies of the book for his mother and grandmother. My wife has tried a couple of the recipes and they have been very nice; she is an accomplished cook and has been complimentary about the recipes. Some of the recipes can appear outlandish but that's life in the Deep South for you, not sure if we can actually get some of the ingredients as they don't sell frogs/toads in the shops round here?
