Nowhere Near As Comprehensive As It Should Be
If you are an Indians fan over the age of 35, or if you really want to be a true Indians fan, do not get this book. If you do, you will think just about everything you need to know occurred between 1994 and 2014. Yes, Mr. Meisel does touch on the death of Ray Chapman, but that barely gets one page of coverage. Yes, Mr. Meisel talks about Addie Joss' perfect game, but he also covers Joss' death from TB and the All Star game benefit in just over two pages. Many credit that All Star game being the forerunner of the MLB All Star game. Instead, we get 3+ pages on the "bug game" featuring Joba Chamberlain and nearly 6 pages on Jim Thome. Maybe the "bug game" should be included, and maybe we should have some ink on Jim Thome, and we certainly should have some material on the1990's Indians, but there is a LOT more to the Indians than the 1990's.Charlie Somers, the Indians' owner at the beginning of the 20th century, basically helped finance the American League. If it weren't for him, we might not even have the American League right now.Yes, Meisel sort of covers Nap Lajoie, but he doesn't cover how Lajoie came to the Indians, nor how he couldn't play in the state of Pennsylvania for a time in order to avoid being served court papers. Meisel doesn't cover the 1940 Cry Baby Indians and their loss of the pennant to the Tigers. (Hey, if you are a fan, you should know the good stuff as well as the bad.) Meisel doesn't cover Luis Tiant's incredible 1968 season, Dennis Eckersley's string of 22 1/3 no hit innings, Al Rosen's 1953 MVP year, nor the trade for Tris Speaker, which eventually lead to the Indians first world championship. He doesn't even cover Shoeless Joe Jackson and his time in Cleveland. Heck, if it weren't for Cleveland, Jackson may never have stayed in the big leagues (he left Philly on more than one occasion). In short, this book is nowhere near as comprehensive a book about the Indians, and it is a shame, because the Cleveland Indians franchise does have a lot of history, and that is history is more than simply from 1994 to 2014.

It's not about "Mattingly or Maddux": it's better
A well-written reminder of the sometimes cursed, sometimes convivial experience that is being an Indians fan.Re-experiencing the "ups and downs" through the eyes of a hometown writer who loyally maintains an everyday presence with the club adds the touch you crave as a fan to what you saw with your eyes. One example is "Little Lake Nellie". I was 15 when Steve Olin died. My experience was the ESPN headlines and Plain Dealer write-ups. Zack gives us the personal insight of the DiBiasio family and others behind the headlines as they come to terms with the tragedy. So many more await in the read ahead: enjoy it Tribe fans, this is your ball club.

A Fun and Informative Read
I collect books about the Cleveland Indians, adding to my dad's collection that I inherited. This is a fantastic addition to my shelf. I have enjoyed reading every page. In the introduction, Tom Hamiliton discusses the Midwest baseball fanbase and their teams, especially relevant in light of this year's World Series with the Cubs.My kids learned a lot about the team from this book of short lessons. We all enjoyed the inclusion of information about Ketchup, Mustard and Onion in the lessons!
