Good resource
The author provides ample examples for writing public policy. It's not necessarily a book you need to read thoroughly - skimming it is just fine. Nevertheless it's a good resource to have in this field.

Policy writing
I bought the text to assist me to develop a course on policy writing and it was perfect for this function. The steps that it outlines are clear and practical and applicable in any country context.

Ripped up and written in
I paid $30 for what I thought was a new book. It has HUGE chunks of book missing. It’s written in and scratched up. Highlighted all through and barely readable. It has stickers all over it. It was listed as “acceptable”. This is FAR from acceptable. I couldn’t even beg someone to take this book.

I feel like I'm reading a different language
This book was assigned reading for a Masters in Public Policy and it's the least enjoyable book I've read in my entire academic career. There's zero flow throughout the book, the chapters, the pages, or even paragraphs. It reads like the author had notes scribbled into a notebook on what she wanted to convey to the readers and instead of telling the story of how to write public policy she just transcribed the notes in paragraph form and called it a book.Sentence to sentence I have no idea what anything is about. We're halfway through the book now, and if I were asked to synthesize what it's about I couldn't come up with a single reflection. To any professors out there looking to assign books, choose anything but this book. It's just not the right one to teach students.

A personal case study, not a guide
I'm not sure about this edition of this book, but the earlier edition was a huge letdown. Instead of an actual guide with points and explanations, this book was a case study based on student experiences and internships. For those seeking to become truly good policy writers and thinkers, I recommend The Eightfold Path by Eugene Bardach. But again , please note this is based on earlier editions, not this one.
