Bought this in the hope that my husband would want to watch it with me and it was a success. Very ' noir ' and realistic and bloody and sad but so well acted that it didn't depress but educated us. The only moan my husband made was that the candle-lit scenes made it hard for him to figure out who was who. I could so I ignored him !

Excellent Gunpowder plot drama
An excellent re-telling of events leading up to (and the aftermath) of the 17h Century doomed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliaments by persecuted Catholics. A really excellent cast, well-driven plot and some absolutely awesome, authentic sets make this a compelling, engrossing, historically interesting production. Perhaps unfair to pick anyone out, but Derek Riddell as the wimpy King James 1 was terrific! Some quite difficult scenes of torture and executions to watch, but these were only included to add authenticity and certainly gave an atmospheric flavour and feel for how grim those times were. Some superb attention to detail such as characters' breath showing in the cold cells of the Tower of London. I wasn't sure how this mini-series would turn out prior to watching, but have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Recommended if you like quality historical dramas.

Brilliant. Fascinating and very well portrayed
Most excellent.3 part mini series of exemplary quality. Very well told story, brilliantly scripted and crafted. The production value is very high with a sharp eye for the finest period detail.1st class acting thought both carries a compliments the camera moves and brilliant sets. The costumes, props, hair and makeup are spot on.Very much an untold side to the Gunpowder plot. Seen from the vantage point of the plotters, their persecution and plight. Told against the backdrop of the despicable treatment of Catholics and Jews. The unfolding drama builds and bubbles into a frantic race against time, the political/sociatal pressures and unwitting betrayal. Each of the episodes is gripping, keeping you glued with cliffhangers to the end.A difficult story to watch as the cruelty know no bounds.Fascinating and very well portrayed.

Gory Historical Drama
Some people found this a bit too gory when aired on the BBC. However, l found these scenes in keeping with how Catholics were treated & tortured at the time. Kit Harrington plays a good moody part & it was also good to see the likes of Mark Gatiss at his best. Enjoyable series & worth watching.

Thought Provoking.
We all know the history of the Gunpowder Plot and how it all ended, very painfully, for the traitors. But what really fascinates me is how they even thought that it was going to do there cause any good. Had it succeeded it probably would have unleashed a massive pogrom against the Catholics. This film goes some way to put a 'human' face onto these misguided individuals. And though I could never have any sympathy for them, they had to die. But the brutality of there punishment and execution was a little over the top, which we 'celebrate' every year.

Bonfire night isnt all about Guy Fawkes.
Brilliant dramatic telling of the background to the gunpowder plot and why its conspirators acted as they did. Kit Harington, in real life a descendant of one of the protagonists, is Catesby, a man who has felt the full weight of an authoritarian state's oppression because of his religion and who decides to fight back.

Nearly History
Fairly violent which realistically portrayed the times. Much historic bits - not Baddesly Clinton however so only accurate in parts. Good acting

Rubbish!
Historically inaccurate. Poor acting. Cannot believe the BBC's name and reputation is associated with this farce.
