Great as always, but still some flaws

*by T***K on Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2012*

This review is going to be primarily about the Road to the Show portion of the game, since that's always my favorite part.Creating the player is pretty much the same. Still limited hair options for the player (I know it's silly, but hey, maybe I want my guy to look like Randy Johnson with a sick mullet or maybe I want him to have a mohawk), but it's still insanely detailed otherwise. You begin your career as a starter on the Double-A team which is so much better because you actually get the playing opportunities you need to get training points, instead of getting into maybe 1 or 2 games a week off the bench. Training and goals are still the same as last year, no easier or harder.Somehow, my guy got the majors at 18 because both the MLB first baseman and the Triple-A first baseman got injured at the exact same time. So of course, my guy is horribly underprepared to be playing in the majors. He strikes out constantly, despite my skill at using the analog batting. There's also no shortage of miraculous and spectacular plays that the opposite team CONSTANTLY makes to rob me of hits. I've seen some amazing plays in real life, but not 3 or 4 in one game every time out. Now, I realize they want to give me fielding opportunities, but it gets a little ridiculous to have Prince Fielder trying to bunt with the bases loaded and 2 out. Cut me a break. David Ortiz also tried to bunt with 2 out and no one on base. In fact, there's a LOT of bunting in the game. I'd rather they just hit it weakly at me if they want to give me fielding opportunities that badly. At least that would be realistic. The commentary... oh, the commentary. Matt Vasgersian is great as the play-by-play guy, but they need to seriously ditch the other two. I muted Dave Campbell 3 games after I started playing because he's that annoying. He just repeats 4 different phrases over and over. "A wry smile there as he knew he got a pitch to hit." That he says after the pitch would've obviously resulted in nothing but a jam shot. And Eric Karros chuckles everything he says. I swear, there isn't a single thing he says in the game that isn't forced out with a little chuckle or some kind of nervous laughter. It's so annoying. The graphics are no doubt incredible. I don't see much of a difference from last year, but that's not a bad thing at all because they were already great. The stadiums look so realistic, my friend walked in the room and thought I was watching baseball on tv. The sounds of the game are awesome, too. After a high fly ball was hit, I heard a guy shouting from the stands, "Drop it! Drop it!!!!" Good stuff.I find hitting to be just as difficult as it was last year. A lot of people are complaining about hitting, but you can adjust the sliders to make it easier if you need to. I agree it's a bit difficult to tell a changeup from a fastball at first, but you get used to it. My player just went 2-for-9 (the game went 18 innings), but I'm not slamming the controller down and running to Amazon to give the game a bad rating. It happens. Hell, great MLB players strike out 4 times in a game now and then. It's frustrating, sure, but it's realistic. Besides, my player still kind of sucks, so I'm just lucky he got 2 hits at all. I could easily adjust the settings and he'll hit 70 homeruns every year, but I want it to be more realistic than that. So there's no reason the game has to be so hard you give up on it.I know I seem to have complained a lot about the game but it still is, in my opinion, the best baseball game you can buy. Once you mute Campbell, Karros, and the awful music they put into the game, you can enjoy a solid and mostly realistic game in Season Mode or Franchise Mode (except for those aforementioned superman catches that you'll still see entirely too much of). It's a great game, plain and simple, and I'd recommend it every time. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because of the silly glitches they could've fixed. I've already heard, "Oh, and it bounces off the wall!!!" when it was a double play ball. There was also the "line drive" exclamation when it was a weakly hit grounder back to the pitcher. Those kinds of things should've already been worked out by now by a company who's been making this game for years.Oh and is it just me, or are all the umpires freakishly small? haha it's odd.

The Show's revels in consistency...both the good and bad.

*by B***W on Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2012*

Any review of MLB 12: The Show is going to be quite similar to those done for past iterations of the series. There's a consistency to what The Show does well - just as there is with where it tends to falter. That certainly holds true with MLB 12 which delivers top notch authenticity, graphics, and depth while failing to provide an acceptable online play experience.POSITIVES*GameplayMLB 12 plays like The Show everyone is used and remains somewhat inaccessible in nature - it can be unrelentingly difficult at times. That's baseball though and The Show is as "sim" as they come. Hit variety has been enhanced somewhat due to better ball physics. It's nothing dramatic but a worthwhile enhancement that pays off over the long-term. The batter-pitcher battle feels strategically realistic and engaging, animations are excellent, and SCEA provides a number of options in controls, cameras, and difficulty levels to help each user tailor the experience for themselves as well as possible. Results always feel realistic and organic and that is the most important thing gameplay can offer.*AuthenticityThe Show remains the most respectful representation of a sport in gaming. The atmosphere, sounds, and pacing makes it feel more like baseball than a video game attempting to replicate it. Enhancements in presentation are subtle but notable such as cuts to a managers in the dugout. The biggest disappointment is that SCEA didn't get in the new 10 team playoffs or division tie-breaker games in for release.*GraphicsThe Show has been arguably one of if not the best looking team sports series this generation. MLB 12 is visually stunning with improved lighting, detailed stadiums, realistic player models and faces, and a wide variety of natural looking animations. The crowd is probably the weakest aspect graphically.*Depth of ModesThough little has changed with Franchise mode and Road to the Show they both provide immense value and combined with 'Diamond Dynasty' there is a commendable level of variety amongst them. There are some issues, like the game start times in Franchise mode, but otherwise they are solid as expected. For those who pick up the game on both the PS3 and Vita the ability to transfer Franchise and RTTS saves between the two systems is really well executed and beneficial.NEGATIVES*Online PlayTo the surprise of few online play with MLB 12 is excruciatingly bad. Debilitating lag often strikes, disconnects along with "traffic delays" are common, and being tied to servers with 'Diamond Dynasty' has meant results aren't always being registered. The lag favors pitching with even the best online players struggling to hit and produce runs. Adding insult to injury SCEA introduced an "Online Pass" this year which means it's now considered to be a value add-on. At this point if online play is important to someone it's well known that The Show will disappoint there. That it is still considered a premiere product despite such a huge portion of the game being severely deficient is a testament to how well it does everything else.*Lack of AdvancementSiphoning off development time to work on the Vita version could be costly for SCEA. There isn't much new with MLB 12 that will be readily apparent to anyone but the ultra hardcore crowd. It's the clear reason why the company avoided putting out a demo. 'Pulse Pitching' is notable for it's ability to make pitching more challenging despite its simplicity and differentiate pitchers better but it can be almost physically painful or nauseating to focus in on (that effect is lessened the more camera angles are distanced from the plate). 'Diamond Dynasty' is conceptually sound but poorly executed, commentary is dry and dated, collision detection between players is still absent, and loading times are still quite lengthy even with a larger hard drive install.SUMMARYThe Show is the most reliable of all sport gaming franchises. Consumers can know what to expect making it an easy purchase for those who have any interest in baseball - and though online play remains miserable even that has become totally predictable. While that confidence in the product is comforting the dwindling sense that SCEA is providing sufficient reason to buy year-to-year has never been more apparent than with MLB 12. Whether The Show has become a victim of its own success is arguable but those are the circumstances that must be accounted for going forward.

Buen juego, aun que algo dificil

*by A***E on Reviewed in Mexico on February 15, 2022*

Juego recomendable.
