Standing Ovation
All i can say is this is a powerful book. The lifestyle and authenticity of being out in the countryside, "Roughing it" is so crisp and ironic and i love all the characters. The development is on pint, the story is full of heartbreak and love. Everything about this appealed to me from the start. This author is very descriptive, but not in the long, boring, lacking way. Every adjective she uses to describe say the fields, flowers, or house completely gives the reader a perfect picture of the scene. The ending made me actually cry it was so wholesome and gorgeous. It is a story that can be read over and over again and still be enjoyed equally (and maybe even more). Catherine Marshall writes books like nobody else.

Love this story
This novel does a great job telling the story of the main character and who she meets in TN. Very intriguing to learn of the different lifestyles.

Most inspirational novel I have read five times!
I recommend this book to all. It should be required reading for all high school students in my opinion. Great example of spiritual discovery as well as people who self - sacrifice even in distasteful human poverty in the hills of Tennessee. Christy will live within you and Miss Alice will be someone you will want to emulate. If you want a story that is based on true experiences which will change your life for the better, read CHRISTY by Catherine Marshall.

A classic must read
I love this book . It is beautifully written and descriptive . Heavy on religious discussion / thought that can get repetitive towards the end . Speaking of the end , readers will be disappointed the author stopped where she did , however it's still a great read .

A classic for everyone, with a small critique
Every historical fiction reader interested in Appalachia should read this classic novel. While Christy is considered faith-based fiction, I found it more spiritual than religious, and I believe it would appeal to a wide range of audiences.I have one main critique, and that is that the book just "ends" rather abruptly at 500 pages. My theory is that the author had a page limit, and she reached it. Nowadays publishers would have made the author cut some of the content, but this was published in 1967 when standards were different. While I am glad that nothing was cut, unfortunately, there is no epilogue or book 2. We can only use our imagination to know how the plot twist (sprung upon us at the very end) ended. My other critique is that the Kindle edition is missing the "afterward" promised in the "special anniversary" edition. Perhaps it is included in the print copy? At any rate, I was disappointed that it was missing.Note that my critique in no way detracts from my 5-star rating. If you are thinking of buying this for your child or young teen, I would hold off. The content and mature themes in the original Christy novel are suitable for adults and mature teens only. The author has a "Christy" series that is suitable for younger readers.

stunning story
I bought the movie series "Christy" a few years ago and recently watched it again. I decided to buy the book, as I enjoyed the movie so much. Catherine Marshall based this book on her mother's time as a teacher in the Appalachians in the early 20th century. I found the story in the book to be quite different from the movie. Some of the events and situations in the movie were taken from the book, but the way they were woven into the story is quite different. Many of the characters had the same names, but their personal stories were very different. Catherine Marshall used in-depth descriptions of Cutter Gap and the way the people lived. The poverty, ignorance and cruelty of some of the people overwhelmed me, and I almost stopped reading the book. I'm glad I finished, because the ending was hopeful. The relationship between Christy and the doctor could have been developed in a deeper way, as Marshall developed her relationship with David. However, the writing as a whole was very good and captured my interest. I realized, after reading this book, that only someone called and gifted by God could go to a place like Cutter Gap to serve and love a people who had separated themselves from normal society. It would be very interesting to me to learn the follow-up for some of the children after they had been taught and influenced by the mission and the dedicated people who served there.

Great book!
I really enjoy this book. I bought the hardcover because I know it's going to be one that I read over and over again. If you like Little Women, or Little House on the Prairie, you'll like Christy!*It is different from the adapted young adult books and the TV series.
