The Bite Before Christmas (Argeneau Vampire)

Because there aren’t many paranormal stories set during the Christmas holidays, I couldn’t resist picking up this novella duology with standalone stories from two popular series. I have read and enjoyed the Night Huntress world of books, but this was my first encounter with the Argeneau vampire series.The novellas fall near the middle of their respective series: 6.5 Night Huntress and 15.5 Argeneau.The Night Huntress series is Urban Fantasy and the Argeneau is Paranormal Romance which makes for a nice nuance of difference in style and tone beyond what the authors bring. I point this out because The Gift is gently paced, sexy and hot, but focused on the quick, fated mates-style romance for an older human and a much older vampire who both think their salad days are gone for good. And, the opposite of this story is Home For the Holidays which turns into quite the action-packed adventure when Cat tries to give Bones a surprise birthday party with his most intimate friends and vampire family around him and one of the guests brings trouble to the party. It is up to Cat, Ian, Denise, Fabian, and a disturbing ally to save the holidays.Both had great merit, but one does have to switch gears to appreciate them together. I had a fab time enjoying the holidays supernatural-style. I’ll have to start at the Argeneau series from the beginning and this has me excited to finish the remaining books I need in the Night Huntress World.

Both the Argeneau Vampires and Cat and Bones series are favorites of mine. I never pass up the opportunity to read anything about them. These two stories are awesome and perfect for the spirit of the holidays, each in their own way. In the Argeneau book, Teddy is the beloved and long suffering chief of police of Port Henry who steps up to the plate and helps his lifelong friends, Elvi and Mabel, find their mates and regain their youth, while he himself continues to age. But friendship only goes so far and Teddy can't face being the charity invite at Christmas, so he takes Marguerite Argeneau up on her offer to borrow a secluded cabin for the holiday. Unbeknownst to him, the crafty Argeneaus arranged for the neighboring cabin to be occupied by one of their older cousins who is beginning to feel the weight of the centuries without a life mate. Needless to say, both of them have a much happier holiday than either one expected. Cat and Bones' story is all about the importance of family at the holidays, those related by blood and those you choose for yourself. Lucky for Cat and Bones, they have a bit of both.

An odd pairing of holiday vampire novellas served up with a fangy twist - from Sand's light humorous Argeneau vampire romances and Frost's sexy wise cracking Night Huntress urban fantasy series.(5 stars = I really really liked it) "Home for the Holidays" by Jeaniene Frost - A Night Huntress novella - Looks like Annette has totally one upped Cat's birthday present to Bones but the surprise guest has almost every one in Bone's 'family' acting really wierd - Frost had released the first few chapter of this as a sneak preview a while back but even having read the beginning before, this Cat and Bones short was really excellent. If the anthology had been a mass market release, I'd have almost said that this story was worth the price of the whole book, since "Home for the Holidays" is a pretty substantial novella length short story, with a really great conflict, with a touching moment near the end, and with lots of cameos, plus a decent sized supporting role for Ian - he's so unabashedly bad but with a redeeming touch of loyalty that makes him a standout character.(3 stars = ok) "The Gift" by Lynsay Sands - an Argeneau connected novella, starring Teddy the Port Henry Chief of Police who has appeared in quite a few of the books (Accidental Vampire for one). Teddy's attempt to avoid a 'charity' invite to one of his paired off friends' holiday celebrations, ends up with him snowed in and with no power, but with a very interesting neighbor to make the experience more interesting. - I was happy that Teddy got his HEA, but there were places where I was borderline squicked with the 60 something Teddy thinking 'gramppa thoughts' while lusting after the 20's looking Katricia. Katricia is around 1600 years old or something like that and Teddy feels bad about scoping her out before he learns her age, and Katricia is on the make from the start but ... I'd have been happier if the lustiness had waited until after the 'turning'. And I have had this pet peeve in the last five or so books, I wish Sands would stop using Little 'fill-in-heroes-name-here' for a significant male body part, it was cute the first time in Thomas' book but needs to be retired.The last 14% of the book has sneak previews for Sand's next book Under a Vampire Moon (which if the rumors are true, will no longer be a hardback release) and for Frost's first Night Prince (Vlad's spinoff series) I am skipping both teasers - I will just wait for the real thing.

I love the Argeneau series by Lynsay Sands. I couldn't stop once I started reading them, and I was looking forward to Teddy's story. It didn't disappoint.

Awesome book. I always enjoy this author and have most of her books. I would recommend to anyone!!!

Si vous n'avez pas lu au moins le tome 5, je vous le déconseille sous peine de vous faire violement spoiler'Criscat is back !Cette nouvelle m'as remis en place les étoiles qui avaient quitté mes yeux dans One grave at a time et confirme que la saga n'est pas centrée sur une héroïne, mais sur un couple de héros, bien que Bones soit plus en retrait. Cat quant à elle nous montre qu'elle est prête une fois de plus à mourir pour son mari.Toutefois, même si l'histoire part d'un secret de famille de Bones, les personnages secondaires ne sont pas en reste. Ian, Denise, Annette (euh.. surtout Ian) sortent de l'ombre et nous font passer un moment digne du tome 5 où tous sont réunis.Trop court !Cette nouvelle qui fait la taille d'un demi roman aurait toutefois en fait mérité d'en être un. J'aurai donné cher pour que JF développe un peu plus certains aspects de HFTH et en fasse un vrai tome dans les aventures de Criscat, à l'inverse du tome 6 qui aurait pu être plus concis.En effet, nouvelle oblige, des détails croustillants sont soit passés à la trappe soit si peu développés qu'on en jetterai presque le livre à travers sa chambre.Accrochez vous les amis, des révélations du feu de Dieu vous attendent ! Tous ce que vous avez toujours voulu savoir sur Bones concentré en 1 tome !On sourit, on rigole, on est choqués à en rester la bouche ouverte pendant 2 minutes et pour finir on reste scotché au bouquin même après l'avoir finit, tant notre émotion est intense.Ian, dirty little pervert C'est un salaud arrogant, un homme imbu de sa personne, plus pervers sexuel que chaud lapin, un vampire sexy parce que dangereux' mais on l'adore ! Si vous n'avez pas encore succombé aux nombreux défauts de Ian, c'est le moment ! Hé oui, ses défauts, car c'est ce qu'on aime chez lui ! Mais pourquoi les filles sont toujours attirées par les mauvais garçons ? Grrrr et ce n'est pas Cat qui vous dira le contraire, accrochez vous à vos claviers, car si vous rêviez d'une vraie scène hot entre Ian et Cat, vous allez être servis ! Et je dis bien vraie, ce n'est pas un rêve tordu de Ian, ni une réalité alternative/parallèle, c'est la vérité ! woowPar pitié JF, un spin off sur Ian !Enfin bref, une histoire comme je les aime, une incursion dans le monde (si peu développé) des Démons, un Ian plus tentant que jamais et un grand moment d'intense alchimie entre nos deux héros :)xoxo Tito

Ich muss vorweg sagen, dass ich das Buch nur wegen der Kurzgeschichte um Cat & Bones gekauft habe und fange daher auch mit diesem Teil in meiner Bewertung an, auch wenn die ersten 116 Seiten des Buches Lynsay Sands gehörten. Das Buch beinhaltet lediglich zwei längere "Kurzgeschichten" der beiden Autorinnen. Cat & Bones erhalten hier zum Glück den größeren Anteil mit einer mehr als 150 Seiten langen "Short Story". Thematisch drehen sich beide Geschichten um Weihnachten bzw. um die Vorweihnachtszeit.Home For The Holidays - Jeaniene FrostFans der Night Huntress Reihe ahnen schon sicherlich, dass Cat auch in dieser Geschichte nicht wirklich besinnliche Weihnachten erleben wird. Alles fängt so gut an, als Cat einige Wochen nach  One Grave at a Time  und kurz vor Thanksgiving alle geliebten Charatere der Reihe (Ian, Annette, Spade & Denise, Mencheres & Kira) zu sich und Bones einlädt, um gemeinsam die Feiertage zu verbringen.Die Feierlichkeiten im engsten "Familienkreis" entwickeln sich jedoch schnell zu einem wahren Albtraum und die Gruppe der Night Huntress Vampire teilt sich in feindliche Lager, so dass nicht nur zu Cats großer Überraschung ihr einziger Verbündeter nicht Bones, sondern Ian ist! Warum das so ist, und wieso Cat nun Ians Kussfertigkeiten sowie Tattoos an äußerst pikanten Stellen kennt und Bones sogar eine "Scheidung" in Betracht zieht, dass sollte jeder unbedingt selbst lesen und genießen.Nach dem eher schwachen letzten Teil hat J. Frost hier wirklich wieder ein Meisterstück abgeliefert. Die Geschichte war witzig, romantisch und spannend. Warum sie diese nicht als eigenes Buch genutzt hat, weiß wohl nur sie selbst und ihr Verlag aber Cat & Ian als Team waren unschlagbar. Mehr von Ian bitte, Frau Frost!Nun aber treten Cat & Bones erstmal für ca. ein Jahr in den Hintergrund und machen Platz für Vlad Tepesh & Leila, die mit dem ersten Teil ihrer eigenen Spin-Off Reihe namens  Night Prince  im Juni nächsten Jahres an den Start gehen und wovon es am Ende dieses Buches schon einen äußerst vielversprechenden Vorgeschmack gibt.10 Sterne für diese unglaublich tolle Kurzgeschichte!The Gift - Lynsay SandsDiese Geschichte gehört zu Sands "Argeneau Novels", welche schon seit ca. zwei Jahren auf meinem Wunschzettel stehen. Ich kenne daher noch keines ihrer Bücher aber nach dieser Kurzgeschichte wird sich das sicher bald ändern.Im Mittelpunkt steht hier der 64jährige Teddy Brunswick, der sich ein Ferienhaus im Wald gemietet hat, um den Weihnachtsfeiertagen zu entkommen. Da er selbst keine Familie oder Angehörige hat, ist er es leid, als "Mitleids-Gast" eingeladen zu werden. Ein Schneesturm schneidet ihn von der Außenwelt sowie Strom und Heizung ab. Nachdem er versucht, den Zustand der Strasse zu überprüfen, trifft er auf seine vermeintlich junge Ferienhaus-Nachbarin Katricia "Tricia" Argeneau und beide beschliessen, die Zeit bis zum Eintreffen des Winterdienstes in Teddys Haus zu verbringen. Was Teddy nicht ahnt ist, dass Tricia nicht menschlich ist und ihre Blut-Lieferungen ebenfalls mit dem Schneesturm ausblieben.Eine schöne Geschichte, die auch ohne Kenntnis der Argeneau Reihe alleinstehend gelesen werden kann und zusammen mit dem Auszug aus dem nächsten Teil,  Under a Vampire Moon , auf jeden Fall mein Interesse geweckt hat. Eine individuellere Beurteilung fällt mir hier schwer, da ich sonst noch nichts von der Autorin kenne.Kurzum, The Bite Before Christmas ist ein Buch, dass sich für alle Fans der Autorinnen sicher lohnt. Für mich war allein schon Cat & Ians Zusammenarbeit zur Rettung der Feiertage ein absolutes Highlight. One Grave at a TimeNight PrinceUnder a Vampire Moon
