Overall great router, with problem in 5GHz band
Received on June 13, 2015Upgraded from ASUS RT-N16, which is bought in 20101) Signal strengthMy house is 2000 sq ft, The router is place at the far corner on the second floor. It's not ideal, but the most convenient location for me. There are about 15 devices constantly connected to it. I measured wifi signal strength at three spots with both router for comparison.Right next to router:Increased from -40db to -20dbTwo rooms away:Increased from -60db to 45dbThe farthest corner away from router: (nearly no signal with RT-N16)Increased from -70db to -60dbSo there is at least a gain of 10 times in signal power, which means a much larger range.2) Ping and throughputWith LAN connection on PC, ping is 9ms, 120 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload speed. With 2.5GHz b/g/n mixed on iPhone 6s, ping is 25ms, 45~50 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload speed. With 2.5GHz b/g/n mixed on One Plus One, ping is 25ms, 45~50 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload speed. With 5GHz a/ac only and "Smart Connect" disabled on One Plus One, ping is 25ms, 25 Mbps download and 11 Mbps upload speed.3) 5GHz networkJust like mentioned from other reviews, both 5GHz band with "Smart Connect" are hard to connect and not reliable. I only have three 802.1ac capable devices, one just won't connect to 5GHz at all, both iPhone 6s and OPO can connect to it from time to time for a few seconds(!), but randomly disconnect even placed it right next to the router. To make 5GHz stable, I had to disable "Smart Connect" which suppose auto select which 5GHz band to use. Then, I need to give both 5GHz band a different SSID. Only this way, I could connect to all three band, but as you can see above, the throughput is about half of 2.5GHz band...*Update*After disable 5GHz then enable it with "Smart Connect" on, it works now. However, the speed is still half of 2.5GHz.4) StabilityJust installed, it has only been on for 4 hours. So, no comments yet, will update after a few month.5) Installation, GUI and featureInstallation took about 5 minutes and trouble free. Settings and upgrade firmware took about 20 minutes, which are also easy to do.GUI is easy to use, I think that's all matters...Feature wise, I use port forwarding, VPN and QOS, all works for me...not much can say about that.6) ConclusionIt's not a relatively cheap router, but my first impression is great. My old RT-N16 just can not handle video streaming on 4~6 devices at the same time and there are always a few spots with poor signal around house. With this upgrade, all those problems are solved (only on 2.5GHz band, haha). So, yes, I am satisfied with this purchase.

A Must!
I had my doubts about this purchase, but to my surprise it has been a great choice. Great range and speeds. I have replaced my Asus RTAC88U with this unit and man I am pleased with its performance. It has released the congestion on my network. The dual 5ghz bands have made a difference at night. I have 22 connected devices most of them always connected. I have not had to restart or reboot yet. The stock firmware is stable, and enough for most people. If you need to configure every last bit and byte, then you can also flash this with DDWRT forward avaliable on TREND-NETs Web page. I have not tested the DDWRT option, and I won't unless the stock firmware becomes unstable, or un-usefull.I will update this review after I have had it up and running for sometime.

Beware needing Tech Support
After using this unit for several months Comcast and I deduced that the constant drops were the routers fault. Not a big fan of wireless so when I mean drops I'm talking about the connection between the router and modem, not the wireless connections. To bring the internet back online you had to either turn the unit off by its switch or unplug it. This may reset it for an hour or a few days but that was the only way to get a WAN connection. The LAN portion worked fine. The issues started when I called tech support. A term used loosely here. I most certainly can understand wanting to see if you can fix the problem but the problem was not going to be fixed using whatever ideas tech support had. It only was going to be an exercise in wasted time. After a half hour of frustration I decided the best option outside of more time was to thank the person and move on.I hung up and purchased a competitors product. This order included several Trendnet switches besides this router. One of the 8 port switches had to be sent back which I got no grief from TS. Its not a good sign when two of your products didn't make 6 months. But that's a result of manufacturer location also.So if you get one of these and yours works and you never need tech support you'll likely love it. But if it fails like mine has the nearest garbage can will likely be less frustrating then calling Trendnet. My occupation is a computer builder and programmer for 43 years. I am not reviewing this except as a consumer who purchased this unit.
