Berkley Pocket Hook Sharpener

I love this sharpener, it is very easy to use and very effective. sharpens the dullest hook in seconds.

For about 3 years I have been using the Berkley Pocket Hook Sharpener on jig heads and on size 4, 6 and 8 hooks, both single and treble. It puts a very sharp uniform point on them. I've used it for about 3 years and was so satisfied that I just purchased 2 more, one for the boat and one for a fishing friend.

While the product does work on what few hooks i have that I can insert correctly the wide-sh and short nose and fat body mean that you can't insert the tip of most hooks into the hole straight so you can't sharpen the majority of hooks, I found a few very short shanked wide gap hooks that could fit it but that was it. So while the product works as advertised, it sharpens hooks great. It's horrible design means that 99% of the time you won't be able to use it on a hook. I saw the bad reviews for this thing and I thought they couldn't be right because Berkley is a brand I thought i could really trust but I've been proven wrong and Berkley has done such a poor job with this product that I will reconsider buying any of their products in the future because it's clear their engineers and designers are 3rd rate at best.

I have a very sizable investment in Berkley equipment on our boat (which includes several hundred $$ in 10+ Heritage Trolling Rods which are very high quality) so I figured this would be a nice addition to a couple of hook sharpening stones that we have.In a single statement.... Berkley should remove it's name from this!I purchased this in March (before launching for the season) and after installing the batteries it sounded loud and seemed to labor but with minimal pressure it did sharpen a couple of hooks.It has been used MAYBE 3 times and sharpened about a dozen trebles while going through 2 more sets of batteries and now it's dead.It's been kept in the cabin and only used by myself so I know it wasn't dropped or damaged.It was a cheap little item and I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised that it didn't last but I would have certainly hoped for more than 3 uses.Oh well, too late to return.... guess we chalk it up to a "teachable moment" as they say! :-)

This does sharpen your hook but it is a little moody. The motor does stall out if you press too hard. But in 10 seconds I had a sharper hook than I did before I used it, and before the wind blew me off the walleyes.

Despite the poor reviews I purchased this unit as not much else is available. It worked just like described and does a very nice job. I've went through all ten boxes of crank baits and still have not changed batteries. I would buy again if needed.
