This classic Spanish teaching tool remains one of the best and most effective learning tools, punta!
I remember buying this book 50 years ago. Berlitz was the leader then, and in my opinion still is. Many of the concepts called modern owe a great debt to Berlitz - it's fair to say they "borrowed" the concepts. I recently decided to refresh my Spanish and of course engaged Duo Lingo, Rocket, Madrigal and Language Transfer. But then I saw this book listed and still available (!), so bought it for old times sake. I'm glad I did. Some important points:1. Many of the reviews state that the book teaches the Castilian accent. In truth it teaches both South American (including Mexican) and Castilian. I live(d) in Mexico and learned my Spanish from Berlitz.2. A few people criticize the printing as old fashioned or too light. This is really a criticism of the kind of printing that, yes, you'd have seen in the 1950's/60's. Trust me, there is NO problem here, short of those folks who would prefer the blinding modern contrast of ultra black on glaring ultra white pages. The book is printed on easy-on-the-eyes ivory paper. Breathe.3. I saw one review that called the book "old fashioned"! Really? Considering that the learn by speaking from the get go concept is constantly being rediscovered and recycled. Why? Because it works. Spanish has been around for centuries, and since 1500 in the America's. All of us learned our mother language from simple exposure and usage. Thus the "modern" methods of emphasizing speaking and participation in baby-like immersion are not new at all.It just so happened Berlitz was the first to discover this, and their method works.4. This book will easily take you into the solid intermediate area, and yes, you will pick up some grammar but in context and through usage. Berlitz puts you into Spanish speaking mode from the very first page, and in essence leads to participate in both sides of a dialogue. You will be speaking effectively from the first to the last, and find yourself thinking the language. This is NOT difficult memorization, and you will speak naturally and without hesitation. You will think and speak Spanish naturally from day one. I'm so glad I stumbled back onto this book after 50 years. It's still the best...

This is a REALLY Good Castilian Spanish Self-Teaching Book!
I have studied the Spanish language off and on for years. I've tried Rosetta Stone and the Pimsleur Method. I LOVE this method because you can learn to pronounce the words with the correct accent without the computer. The phonetic pronunciation is included with each word and phrase. I do use the computer periodically so that I can check my pronunciation. But, that is not necessary. I'm just a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to learning the Spanish language.I practice with a friend everyday. We learn the words and the questions. Then we ask each other the questions in Spanish...prompting us to remember the names of objects and phrases. On Saturdays, we write down the questions and answers, then quiz each other on that week's material. Then on Sundays, we begin the next chapter. It's really a lot of fun. There are 38 lecciones that have A LOT of Spanish for you to learn. I don't know if I'll be a fluent Castilian Spanish speaker when I reach the end of Leccion 38. But, I do know that I will be speaking A WHOLE LOT of Castilian Spanish. Most of you may know that Castilian Spanish is the Spanish spoken in Spain. That is my preferred dialect.I am VERY happy with my purchase.

A bit disappointed
It’s great for first time Spanish leanings I think. But someone at an intermediate or advanced understanding will find it boring and there’s no new information. Want what I was looking for but I’m sure others may find what they seek here.

Use for home study or in class
I love this series of books. I have them in Spanish, Italian and French. They were written in the 1940s in a style that you enjoy reading for pleasure. Each sentence has an English translation. Each word also has its pronunciation. After reading through the book you should with practice be able to speak in any situation as you should have a wide vocabularly.
