How Should We Then Live

Every American should view this series
Francis Schaeffer was a prophet in 1976. What is happening in our society and government was predicted almost to perfection.

A Christian perspective of Western Civilization
I saw the video series when it was first released. Recently I watched it again on YouTube but was not satisfied with the quality and the difficulty in finding the episodes in order. The content is a Christian perspective of Western Civilization. It is not dry lectures but is filmed on various locations in Europe along with art and artifacts from the different periods. It is still relevant today.I decided to buy this DVD. I am pleased with the quality and the bonus interviews. Now I have the ability to share the video series with friends. I received it promptly and an happy with my purchase.

A Visual Tour of Great Contrasts
Dr Schaeffer treats the viewer to a historical review of the centuries since Christ's first coming. The viewer will enjoy the lessons of history and the fact that they are linked by a common theme of nature versus grace-the spirit of man versus the Spirit of God. The only thing to have improved this series would have been a Bible study guide as the narration refers often to the Bible; thus references that would allow someone to see the Bible itself comment on themes/thoughts would be nice. The disc does give an outline of the content but again, as a study the Scriptural addition would be of great help. A qualified theologian or astute Bible student could supply this themselves and get even more out of this series along with the suggested book of the same name. Overall, quite enjoyable as a series and useful in expanding the usually limited worldview of the modern mind.

Francis Schaefer Classic
As with all of Francis Schaeffer's work, read it slowly, take notes and let what he says sink in. While written in 1976 the work is very relevant today as the path of western civilization continued as he predicted. The impact of the rot that he points out is now more evident then when the book was written. Essentially he details the rise and slow demise of Western Culture through Philosophic, Scientific and Religious aspects.

A Clear World View
Francis Schaeffer made this classic sometime in the 1970's. He examines world history through the arts, sciences, and cultural developments to understand what the consequences of our world views are. In a nutshell he explores two threads of thinking, the growth of the humanist world view that makes man the center of life, and the biblical world view that makes God the center of life. The humanist thread always fails and ends in wars, despair and suicide. The biblical thread that relies on God's intervention, not man's strength given to God, brings life and equity in justice.I especially enjoyed his explanation of the arts and why the different trends developed over the centuries, as men exalted men, resulting in confusion as represented in the changes of art throughout. This is a very thoughtful study worth viewing again and again.

This needs to be watched!
I went to the seminar back in the 70s and always wished I had kept the book to this series. I was very thankful I could find it on Amazon. This series is still extremely relevant and many of his predictions for our society in the series has come to pass. My wife and I kept looking at each other as we watched it and said, "Does that sound familiar?" as Dr. Schaeffer talked about things that are extremely like what is happening in our society today!

Christian Philosopher Dishes Up Some Amazing Observations on how we go to where we are today.
There will be no light reading here. This is a serious, and very deep Christian philosophical work that traces western civilization from Rome to mid-seventies America and Europe. What is haunting about this is by tracing trends in theology, art and philosophical trends Dr. Schaeffer offers a future of the United States that, while written 40 years ago, is dead on target for what we see today. Why the headlong rush to the faithless narcissism of the 21st century is clearly, and sometimes startlingly, predicted in his thinking. Back in the day, this book changed my life,

Documentation of man's cycles of pride, hubris and destruction ...
Documentation of man's cycles of pride, hubris and destruction. An accurate education of history that fore-tells the future. When will man discover that it is the spirit that matters, and not the man?
