Ramblin’ Rose
Biography of Rose Maddox of Maddox Brothers and Rose. Well into my senior yearsI remember in the 40 & 50’s Hayward, California listening to MB&R with my parents. And seeing them in Hayward & Napa. I have several of their recordings now available on CD’s. They were trend setters.RambLin’ Rose biography by Jonny Whiteside is superior reading into the life of a destitute family and of the tremendous effort to overcome hardships of that time. Personal photographs are an added bonus. Sad they’re not in color. If you liked the classics Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, I’m certain you will enjoy the exploits of a true American Family.Even if you are not familiar with Maddox Brother & Rose, I highly recommend this book.

The book?...Oh, it is great. Thus woman, Rose Maddox, has been a hero to me for my whole life. It is wonderful to be able to read her life story. Debbie Bkack

I knew this lady, her brothers ... and her mother
As I began a career in broadcasting and songwriting, one of my first exciting experiences during my first year in radio was in meeting The Maddox Brothers and Rose, billed as "America's Most Colorful Hillbilly Band". That meeting was to develop into a personal friendship with this unusual family from Alabama. I was doubly honored when they recorded two of my musical compositions, "Wedding Blues" and "When The Sun Goes Down" (Columbia Records). Rose also recorded "When The Sun Goes Down" after being signed by Capitol Records as a single act when most of the brothers chose to retire from the musical scene."Ramblin' Rose: The Life and Career of Rose Maddox", is one of the most well constructed and factually entertaining biographies ever written on the subject of country music artists. It's obvious that the author, Jonny Whiteside, did some deep study and many interviews in order to capture the authenticity of this amazingly talented lady. Jonny also includes a detailed focus on the five brothers (only four brothers were active in the group after reaching national attention). Also given well deserved recognition is their tough and sometimes difficult mother, who also acted as the strict manager of her highly successful brood!Although Rose and her brothers were never acknowledged as being part of the Nashville crowd ... a great loss for Music City, USA ... they were recognized as one of the most important musical groups based in California. Mentioned in this book is the fact that super-pop-balladeer Bing Crosby considered Rose as being "the best of all female country singers" during that important era. After absorbing the hardships the family endured while hitch-hiking and stealing rides on various freight trains in attempts to fulfill the mother's dream of escaping the depression years in Alabama and moving her crew to the the golden state of California, you may detect echoes of the movie, "The Grapes of Wrath". Honestly, if the screenplay followed Jonny Whiteside's perfectly written book, "Ramblin' Rose: The Life and Career of Rose Maddox" could still be made into a very good motion picture! As I write this, Cal Maddox is the only surviving member of this magnificent musical family. Although he is now in his 90s, he and his relatively new bride make their home in Oregon. Happy to say, I talk with him regularly ... and he still sings while playing his dynamic fiddle!
