Good Book
The heavy jazz influence in this book but may be a turn-off to the beginner or rock-oriented types like me. But the techniques and methods in the book are useful for any style of music. This is the 5th or 6th book from Ed Friedland that I have used for learning and I haven't come across a dud yet, this book is certainly no exception. I would recommend it to anyone willing to try something outside their comfort zone.

EXCELLENT BOOK
I've bought a lot of bass instructional material over the past 20 years and the stuff by Ed Friedland is the best available. I've gotten rid of almost everything I've purchased except for the stuff by Ed.

Disappointing
Disappointed to find that this book is solely focused on jazz improv. Many other types of music one can improvise to. The title/description leads one to think it covers more than one style of music. Well, it does...various styles of jazz music...none of which I like....cuz I don't care for jazz.

educational
The bass has been compared to the human voice which is why some of us really dig the sounds this instrument provides in its various formats. Learn with this educational book.

A step in the right direction
This book is far from being all you need to learn to improvise but it is definitely a step in the right direction. Mr. Friedland himself stated that in the book.If you need a book with scales and formulas this is not for you. Mr. Friedland makes his point through explanation, examples and let you figure out the rest on your own. For every hour you spend reading this book there are 4 hours of study/experiment you must do to take advantage of this material. The only thing I did not like was the fact that he did not provide answers to some of his own harmony exercices. Some things I could not understand and needed an intructor's help.A great book.

Fabulous!
I joined a music group where there was very little rehearsal time. I wanted to develop my bass improvisation, so I could play something slightly more interesting than the root notes. This book was immensely helpful. A slight caveat: i've got a moderate amount of music knowledge, (eg Grade 5 theory, piano), so I don't know whether this would assume too much if your knowledge of music theory is less developed.I really enjoy the bass lines I play now!

Eccellente
Un must!
