is the black a coat of paint?

I would assume so, I purchased the silver ones and the black spider decal was rubbed off within an hour of use. No big deal to us though, they are still nice, heavy knives. Great for the price!

how durable are these

For what you're paying and getting, they're pretty durable. Keep in mind that these are NOT made for combat or professional knife throwing. They are ONLY good for getting your form and distance down. Also, while they can be thrown by the "No-Spin" method, I would personally recommend that you stick with the "Spin" throw with these. You can expect the tips to get bent or broken off. That's OK, just file, or hammer them back into shape and they're ready for more action. I have bent/broken a couple of tips off of mine and they work just fine after a little elbow grease.
