The book itself is a paperback, but comes in a hard cover that includes the plastic templates. Some lovely bag designs of different sizes, with clear and precise instructions and photographs. There is even an Oops section that covers the things that can go wrong and how to correct them. I have yet to try out the patterns, but am confident that the bags will be easy to make following Debbie's instructions. The book allows you to follow a basic pattern, then adjust to your needs (pockets, applique, etc) meaning you're not restricted to the patterns in the book. I would call myself an intermediate sewer with a lot to learn. This book gives templates and clear instructions to construct a variety of backpacks for kids and adults. You can let your imagination go on designs, add bits etc if you are creative. With all the patterns included, this book really is great value for money. I have a couple of Debbie's other books, all of which I find ideal, and have met Debbie at a demonstration - she is very funny, down to earth lady who loves to share her knowledge and skills with others. Would definitely recommend this book unless you are a very accomplished bag maker looking for more intricate designs, but you can always adapt these basic patterns easily.
