The bodies, muscles and skeletons are well illustrated and explained. The different layers of muscles are shown individually as well as a whole. Where the muscles are attached to the bones (even those hidden) are shown. The illustrated examples are plentiful and comprehensive. The writeup is well researched and written clearly. It has all the technical speak, including pronunciation, but still easy to understand when read. Every anatomy part and every muscle shown is explained in terms of functionality. There are some drawing tips but not as much compared to dedicated instructional anatomy books. For example, it doesn't teach much on drawing twisting torsos. As such, this will be a great companion to other instructional anatomy books, especially so for those that focus on poses and have less details on the underlying human form. Over the years, I've collected TONS of anatomy books in an attempt to improve my figure drawing skills. The figure is one of my absolute favorite things to draw. As I'm working on écorché for an anatomy class I'm taking, so I finally pulled this book off the shelf (I've had it since January, 2016). As I worked through the bones and muscles in the section on the torso, I had to pause and get up to write this review because there is no doubt. This is THE best book on anatomy that I've ever studied. And of all the books that I have on my shelf (more than two rows on a large shelf)! I've always wondered what happens to this bone or that bone and this muscle or that muscle when the person is in a position other than standing with weight distributed on both feet. I haven't gone through all sections, but in the torso section, the author illustrated movement showing the bones and/or muscles and how they act in that movement. I've attached a couple of pictures, one of the clavicle and its movement and the other of the muscles of the scapula and how they react. If anyone else is like me and wondered these things, this book is a must-have for figure drawing enthusiasts! With that said, it's not for the beginner. It focuses more on how bones/muscles work together and what's going on under the skin than it does on actual drawing assignments like many of the other books that I have. They served their purpose. This book builds on the skills acquired from the how-to-draw books and/or classes. However, if you purchased it and you're a beginner, and you feel it's not a good purchase for you, for whatever reason, I'd suggest that you keep it, if you plan to continue studying the figure because one day soon, this book will be a precious gem in your collection.
