Could I stain the back side of the frame and use the canvas in reverse?

Yes you could. The wood is easily stained. The surface area of the canvas will be smaller but it’s doable

Can you paint on them with other paint that isnot acrlyc paint?

I'm sure you can use any type of paint that is opaque. Watercolor would probably not work. I use them for felt collages.
