Another Good DeWalt Design
I needed a lightweight, portable compressor to allow me to take my various nail guns to work on friends and relatives projects. Others had given this DeWalt pretty good marks, and the price is certainly right. I always appreciate the thought that DeWalt puts into tool design...once in a while, they miss an ergonomic feature, but it's clearly not for lack of effort. This guy carries easily, will stand up for storage, and sits on rubber feet when in use, so it's quiet and stays put. Large, easy to read pressure guages, and easy to adjust regulator. Very quiet in operation...ideal for inside use...doesn't even startle the cats. Plenty of oomph for all but the heaviest-duty uses. I wouldn't shingle a roof with it, but it keeps up with any finish work I do, and adequate for framing if you take a little time. Others reviewers mentioned the break-in procedure. It's somewhere in the manual after pages of the usual caution/warning stuff. Wouldn't have known about it otherwise (you'd think they would put an advisory label over the power switch, or something visible like that.) Anyway, it's nothing more than 'open the drain valve and let it run for awhile' deal....but given the early failures a few other reviewers had, I'll take DeWalt's advice. Had it for a month, and have used it several times. All in all, another terffic DeWalt value.

Trim Compressor First Impressions
I have had this unit about 4 weeks now. I do small home repairs and upgrades so its use is sparingly. Having said that my first impressions are positive. The unit totes easily becuase of its compact size and weight. I tested it to see if it held its pressure (unit just sitting under full tank pressure and 90PSI on the regulated side). It did well holding the max pressure and dropping off just 3 psi after about 3 hours. With an18 guage nailer its cycle time is quite low for a small tank (no numbers to offer, just observation). I tried it with my framing nailer (yes I know it is not meant for that) just to see what would happen and it cycled after every 2 nails. So don't abuse it. It is quiet! As others have spoken it would have been nice if they had put rubber feet on the backside so when you stand it upright it has a padded rest. I will update this with further info as it becomes necessary. An update 6 months later: Still working just fine, no problems and it is a delight to have on the job as it is easy to transport and store. Nice to have it for the trim work I do.

DEWALT D55140 REview 12-10-2010
I have owned DEWALT D55140 approx. 2 months. It performs the way I needed it to perform. It is light weight and quieter than other air compressors this size. It has given me no problems. I take very good care of my equipment and fellow the maintenance instructions which are not difficult to do. I use it for my 16 ga. air nail gun and to keep my auto ties filled with air at their proper level. It is very dependable so far as to my needs. I keep it in my garage in order to air up my tires as needed, but when I do some house maintenance: it is very handy to run my air nail guns I cannot lift very heavy equipment anymore because of some back and neck problems and I do not like noisy air compressors. This fills the bill so to speak. I drain the air out of the tank after each use which is not hard to do at all. As I go thru the garage I still look at it (because it shape will get your attention) sitting there ready to air something up when I need it. I do not regret buying it. Amazon.com had a very reasonable price $125.00 at the time I purchased it. It saves me from having to start up my 25 gal. air compressor each time I have a small project to perform.

DEWALT D55140 1‑Gallon Trim Compressor – Quiet, Portable, 4‑Star Performance
DEWALT D55140 1‑Gallon Trim Compressor – Quiet, Portable, 4‑Star Performance The DEWALT D55140 delivers up to 135 PSI with a 2.6‑amp motor, oil‑free pump and a 1‑gallon tank, reaching full pressure in about 1 min 14 sec. Users praise its quiet operation (~69–75 dB), compact size, integrated handle and rubber feet that reduce vibration and floor marks. It’s ideal for inflating tires, light pneumatic tools and small home projects, with quick recovery and easy start‑up that rarely trips breakers. The main drawbacks noted are a plastic gauge that can arrive with a marred finish (easily polished) and occasional reports of regulator leaks or o‑ring issues. Overall, for the price it offers reliable, low‑noise power in a portable package, earning a solid four‑star rating for DIY and light‑contracting use.

Great physically small compressor for motorhome.
I wanted a compressor for our motorhome with enough pressure and volume to inflate the 19 inch tires on the motorhome and the 17 inch tires on our towed pickup. I looked at the 12v units but they all have limited duty cycle and pump relatively slow. They are also expensive. This compressor fits nicely in a basement compartment with its hose and fittings. It has no problem reaching the max 120PSI the rv tires are rated for and works fine at the 80psi we actually run. While it is certainly slower than my home, 220 v compressor, it is livable to fill a truck tire. Being a 120v unit it basically has a 100% duty cycle so I can fill 6 rv tires if I need to with it cooling off to meet duty cycle. It also gives me the ability to refill the tires on our towed Chevy Colorado ZR2 if I want or need to 'air down' for the terrain. Our motorhome has 1000 Watts of solar and a 3000 watt inverter backed by a large LiPO battey, so in any practical scenario, I can effectively run the compressor as much as I need to. For my special need it has proved the perfect answer. Now if it could only run a 1/2 inch air powered impact wrench...LOL

Perfect off-grid air compressor
Used to lug around a heavy dual chamber air compressor this overkill for most projects. Occasionally we need an air compressor off-grid powered by a honda 2000W generator. That genny easily kicks this Dewalt air compressor. It does run more often then a larger capacity compressor but its very quiet... and did i mention light! Really like this unit. More refined that our commercial compressor. One thing to consider is the controls placement - the arrangement does lend itself to future breakage. Controls are not well protected. As this was designed for portability some extra care taken to protect controls should have taken priority.

Incomplete guessing game
I'm so very pissed off after purchasing this air compressor. I know nothing about air compressors, other than the fact that I needed one for a pressure pot for resin casting. It was small enough, affordable enough, and well reviewed. Obviously others know what to expect from a DeWalt, whereas I did not. Here is what is wrong with this thing: 1. There is no air hose. Nope, no hose at all. If you're a beginner, and looking for a complete package, THIS IS NOT IT. 2. The hose that comes up as a suggested selling item via Amazon does not fit this compressor. According to the documentation, it has a "Universal Quick Connect", whatever the heck that is. Whatever it is, it's not part of the hose Amazon suggests as an accessory for this compressor. 3. This "Universal Quick Connect" isn't so damned "Universal" after all. I bought what I thought was a Universal adapter to try and get some use out of the wasted air hose (see above point). Guess what? It did not fit this compressor. Universal, my ass. 4. So now here I am with this universal adapter, I figure I'll just replace the adapter on the air compressor. Unless you have an open ended wrench to get the supplied plug off of there, good luck. Remember, I'm a beginner. I don't have a lot of tools, nor adapters, not experience, nor money. WTF, how the heck do you get this damned thing off of here. 5 Why the holy f*** is there no hose with this thing? I mean, really? WTF... Again, if you're looking for a complete package, avoid this at all costs. If you're an expert, and know what you're doing, great, but if you're a beginner like I was, this is most certainly not the product to get. Physically go to Home Depot or Lowes and actually talk to someone. Hopefully they'll inform you of what you actually do need to make use of this.

Compact Power
I purchased this Dewalt compressor unit because I wanted a small, reliable product and light weight that could easily be put the trunk of a car and transported without a lot of worry about tying down. I don't do a great deal of nailing but have found that this unit has the power that I required and was able to be used with my framing nailer and drive 3 1/2" nails with a fairly rapid pace. At first I had trouble with a small leak in the airline connection and this greatly affected the compressors performance as it would with any unit. But after taking the time to properly wrap all line connections with teflon tape and make all connections tight it performed perfectly for my usage. I like the overall design and low profile also the idea that with the 4 point leg supports it will not want to tip over when taking corners or stopping quickly in the car or when placed on an angle, it is also light enough that it can be fully portable when required.A great unit.

Wonderful little compressor... if you have a use for it...
Wonderful little compressor... It's incredibly quiet compared with other compressors, it only draws 3 Amps or so, it holds the pressure, it has a regulator to adjust output pressure... but I don't know what it could be used for, because in a shop or for renovation jobs it's too small... Would be enough for a brad nail gun, and almost enough for a finish nail gun... but how much sense does it make to have a tiny compressor just for your brad nail gun?!... Maybe for an artist to do airbrush stuff...I don't know... I planned to use it to power a flooring tool, brad nail gun, finishing nail gun... It only holds one gallon of compressed air and only at 135 PSI... The engine runs almost continuously - it's just too small for such use.... (I returned it and went for the next bigger model - 2.5 American gallons @200 psi) However, I was impressed how well it worked and how quiet it was...

Great for small jobs and light/med use
I've had mine for about a year now and have been very happy with it. It is great for general use for someone that does not rely on it all day everyday. Being a smaller unit, it does come on quite often when using. If you have a few tools, tire filling, compressed air for cleaning things out then it is perfect. If your looking for something for larger jobs and daily use I would consider a larger unit. The build quality is solid and it's not too heavy. Read the manual as you should drain it from the valve when done for the day to avoid water collection in the tank. The only reason I could see anyone being unhappy with this, is if they plain and simply bought the wrong tool for the job they need. This is a small compressor, use it as such. I can't tell you how much money this has saved me over buying those compressed air cans for cleaning dust out of PCs.
