I know that any computer can provide you with an infinite number of calligraphy fonts and make it easy, but there is no substitute for the satisfaction of producing a beautiful item done in calligraphy by your own hand. This set is great for the beginner and has what you need to get started. It came to me very securely packaged, has a good variety of styles and sizes of nibs, 3 straight nib holders, 4 jars of an easy flowing ink (black, blue, red and green) and a pen holder well, all of which is provided at a very reasonable price. You open the box and the first thing on top is a card with instructions on how to remove the oil film that is put on the nibs by the manufacturer which is exactly what you need to do before you use the nibs. I was a little surprised that there was no literature or engraving on the nibs that identified which type and size they are nor was there any information about cleaning them in between uses, but there are plenty of websites that give detailed information on those items. After you get the basics down you will want to go on to more professionally manufactured supplies (which are, of course, much more expensive), but this is a great set for learning and having fun.

My daughter has award badges for using an app for different languages and Japanese is one of them that she likes to write out and draw because it helps with the memory process. I just started my new hobby in Calligraphy. Opening this set, I was instantly transported back to high school art class where I first learned the art of hand lettering.I'd say the quality is comparable to what I used in high school. I have purchased better nibs since and there is a clear difference. However, for the price of this kit, and for the variety of nibs that you get to try, it is worth the cost.
