Introducing Semiotics: A Graphic Guide (Graphic Guides)

As I get older, I have less patience with wordy, poorly written books intended tp popularize some ideas. And the rise of the graphic novel well done by writers like Neil Gaiman lead me back to my child hood pleasure in reading comic books (surrepticiously) at the small town drugstore.In short, the brief well written text accompanying the clever illustrations made reading this book an enlightening pleasure for me.I can only compare this with the pleasant experience of being in the University and broadening my (out of my major) knowledge with the old Penguin books I bought used.

This is a fair introduction and easy to read. I mostly learned broad ideas and names -- there were many places where I didn't think I got quite enough detail to understand the concept, but it IS a comic

What I like about these series of books I is that people who write them cut the "professional" jargon and get straight to the point.Then, one can use the bibliography to delve further into the subject being addressed.

This is a good pocket guide to gain a better understanding of public visual communication. It is a nice size that can be carried in a coat pocket. Read this.

The subject seems to start out simply and then, with modern philosophical input, gets confusingly complex. The book seems to delineate some of the issues but its clear that going deeper requires a significant commitment.

This work gave a good basic introduction to the complicated field of semiotics. I found the art useful and entertaining.

School book!

Most of the "graphics" in this book are just poorly drawn black & white cartoons meant to be funny rather than examples that help clarify the concepts in semiotics.

Graphic guides fall between the conceptual and the construction somewhere...and are a useful heuristic to move between the abstractions via the visible field. This little book does that in spades.

If you were looking for an introduction to know what's semiotics and what does it study, and have an idea of who are the main autors is fine. However, if you wanted dig a little bit in the theorical propousal of these autors, this is not the book for you.

Giving a Semiotics book 5 Stars feels strange. Here I am creating meaning with you. It might change the way you experience the world. Or it might not.

Good introduction to semiotics! Amazing way to get an overview of what can be a confusing subject due to its many application fields. Great lecture for undergraduates who want to prepare for semiotic lectures.

A current classic. Both the text and images (that are quite meaningful) help to understand the development of semiotics through all the main autors and theories of this discipline. Useful for learning and also for teaching.
