Ka-Bar BK11 Becker Necker Neck Knife , Black

I've been carrying an ESEE Izula for quite some time now and really enjoy carry a neck knife, and truly appreciate the added versatility that carrying a fixed blade gives as opposed to carrying a folder. Being a fan of the Izula, I naturally discovered that ESEE had collaborated with Kabar to design the EsKabar neck knife with incorporates the Izula's hand design with the Becker Necker's blade design. Since I already owned the ESEE Izula and have given it tons of use in the woods, I figured I would try something a little different and pick up the Becker Necker. I've owned a number of Becker products in the past and have never been disappointed, so naturally I had high hopes for this knife as well! This knife was no disappointment! Upon receiving the knife, I immediately noticed that it came from the factory with a beautifully sharp and symmetrical blade grind! Nice job Kabar! I then took a few moments to wrap the handle with some trusty 550 paracord and then quickly took to the woods to test this knife out! It handles batoning tasks great, as long as your reasonable and don't try to do anything stupid like baton knotted wood, or baton ridiculous logs of course! Kabar's 1095 CroVan steel held it's edge very admirably and got plenty of work done without needing to be touched up! The grip is more or less a 3-finger grip, but quite comfortable! I didn't find there to be any bad hot-spots or major discomfort while using the knife. However, keep in mind that this style of knife is not designed to be used for hours upon hours of whittling either! One of the tasks I put this knife through was fabricating an Arapuca Bird Trap from saplings in the forest. Then I crafted a figure-4 deadfall to trigger the trap. The knife made easy work of this task, and was a real pleasure to use! The blade size is very nice - not too big, not too small. The blade is small enough to make it convenient for neck carry, yet at the same time not so small to inhibit it's usefulness as a survival knife! As an added bonus, this knife was designed with 2 extra features that the EsKabar and Izula don't have; a bottle opener and wire breaker! I can't honestly say I have found myself in any situations where I've needed to break wire, but I've already put the bottle opener through it's paces, and it works just fine! Overall, I absolutely love this knife! Some people complain the the sheath is a bit too large for neck carry, but I've been carrying this knife for nearly a month now with no issues whatsoever! I did however choose to immediately remove that new added retention lever that Kabar has added to the corner of the sheath. I find it to be way too big and clunky if you plan to carry this knife as a neck knife. I also have no issue with this knife printing under my shirt either. I would highly recommend this knife! Update: I just recently decided to remove the paracord wrap from the handle because I wanted to start using this knife in more "food prep" application to see how it performs, and the paracord would present real problems as far as sanitation goes... (Good luck trying to get raw chicken juice out of paracord!). Anyways, I decided to cut up an apple for my yellow lab, Henry, and I to have for a snack today. The knife performed quite well, and certainly can pull off any task that a paring knife could be used for. Obviously a knife like this isn't the most ideal blade for food prep due to it's thick blade stock, however it certainly gets the job done! I will try to post more shots of my BK11 in action! It's not what I'd call beautiful, but it is a superb example of the knife makers craft. It is a utilitarian knife, sturdy and well thought out with excellent ergonomics. It arrived sharp, not scary sharp, but that only took a few passes at the strop to change the edge to tissue paper cutting sharp. I'm a big guy, 6'2" and 225 lbs with....mediumish hands. Not small, but not really large. A touch bigger than medium maybe, but the grip fits me just right. The top of the handle fits the heel of my palm without digging in, since it has just enough curve at the butt-end, and the bottom of the grip is just long enough for my pinkie to grasp. The open end that forms the bottle opener doesn't snag inside my pocket, although I may round the edges just slightly. It's very lightweight but sturdy because of the cro-van steel and the temper, which is excellent. The coating is tough and appears that it will be long lasting because it doesn't scratch, even when I gave it enough of a try to mimic the use it will encounter in the field. The full flat grind, in my opinion, isn't ideal for bushcrafting, but it wasn't made as a bushcraft specific knife, rather more general purpose for outdoor, and last ditch tactical use blade. There are better blades for tactical use if that's the main thing you plan on using it for, the grip and butt-end will not make for a good enough thrusting weapon. It certainly slices handily, but again, slicing with a blade this short isn't ideal tactically. Cold Steel makes a few neck knives that will be way better for tactical use and most of them are cheaper and flatter, with excellent retention and release from the sheath, where this knife won't come out fast, smooth or silently *enough* to be of the best service as a desperation weapon. That said, for primarily outdoor use, it will give years of excellent service. I've been collecting knives for almost 6 decades, and this is the best all around, purpose built, neck knife I own, my Mora Eldris being second, if for no other reason than near perfect ergonomics, and a very close third would be my QSP Neckmuk, but that knife and it's chain are so pretty, once my fabulous Norwegian female person sees it, I'll never get my hands on it again, but she's way prettier than I am, so it will look better on her anyway... Overall I give it a 4.5 as there are no perfect knives, and... I'm what people politely call "frugal" when they really mean "cheap" - I'm not cheap, but I remember a time when made in USA meant top quality at a reasonable price, and this knife, for what it is, and how much metal, design, and other items of business overhead is in it, is a touch too expensive, about $45-47 would be more reasonable, given it's small size and glorified plastic sheath, not to mention the parachord necklace rather than GI dog tag ball chain, which I have to buy separately. No one should ever put anything around their neck that can't be broken off in a pinch, especially something that will see serious outdoor use, especially in situations where help is only available by helicopter after you walk to where there's either cell service or the last north American pay phone. Altogether a fine hard use utilitarian tool and I'm glad I bought it, I would recommend it to even a close friend or family member. Good work Ka-Bar, now if you could shave 9 bucks off the price or give it a steel tipped leather sheath, like the WWII Air Corps survival knife and a dog tag chain, then you could even charge a bit more. Now, if only someone would make a 3.25-3.5" Scandi grind, skeleton handled neck knife my quest for the perfect necker would be over.

What a great knife. Right out of the box it is very sharp. I have been carrying this knife for a week now and love it. I carry the knife horizontal on my belt and right hand draw it when needed, you don't even know the knife is there until you need it! Good job KaBar. Added 5/23/16: I've been carrying this knife for around 2 years now. There was no way I was going to let the short review (above) stand as the last word on this knife. It is still going strong after all of the use I've given it. The knife deserves a longer review! The knife still has a good edge on it. I sharpen it from time to time with my diamond sharpener kit. I'll pull it out, clean it up, and use it to cut produce when I'm in the kitchen at work and can't find a good sharp knife. I'll even use it as a tool. I don't get real crazy with it but I've unlocked doors like you would typically use a credit card. Just take it easy with it and take my time, it works fine. I'm still using the original holster and carry it horizontally at my left waist. I'm even using the paracord that came with it to mount it to my belt. As you can see in the picture I never did wrap the handle, I like the handle bare for better clean up. I put this thing through a beating. You can see where some of the paint is scuffed off at the end of the handle from bumping into stuff, I don't mind since it gives it character. Holding the knife it is well balanced. It is light enough to carry and not weigh you down, but strong enough to last all this time. There are many options as to what you can do with the handle. I've even seen people make wooden handles for them. I get a lot of compliments on this knife. People constantly asking to see it. I gladly show it to those that I know, and don't hand it to strangers! I remember when I was first looking for a fixed blade knife to carry as I do this one, I was considering others. I'm really glad I went with this Ka-Bar. It has been money well spent. With the knife sharpening kit in tow, I don't mind taking this knife on any camping, hiking, fishing, hunting trip. Use it at work all the time. It's good to have in the event of self defense since no other weapons are allowed on the premises. There is no other like it or equivalent in quality, at least that I have seen. You won't be disappointed in this knife, I haven't been. I'll check back in a few more years and let you know how it's going!

I bought this knife a few months ago for my edc (every day carry). The reasons I chose this knife was based on reviews I had read, I was comparing neck knives between this and the izula. I was looking for a knife that could keep up with my lifestyle. A knife for my pocket must be able to perform in wet, muddy, sandy, freezing and all around constant heavy use and abuse. I am a well driller, I use my knife for everything from stripping wire, opening boxes, bags, hell I might use it as a screwdriver. With all that my life throws at my pocket knife I learned quickly that I need to carry a fixed blade knife. Folders just get full of sand and dirt and what not, next thing ya know you've got a good blade on a bad handle, Or worse if you get cut. OK so now with the good things about this knife. 1. This knife is sharp! Out of the box its very sharp. 2. Keeps an edge! I could cut a mile of wire with this blade between sharpening. 3. Great size! This knife will ride comfortably in my pocket in the sheath. With extra clip its a bit bulkier. 4. Again the size. The blade is thick, some people may not care for the thickness of the blade but its a tough knife and there's no doubt when you see the hunky blade. 5. Customizeable! I like the ability to make a custom set of scales for this blade. It gives you the ability to make it more personal. The bad 1. It don't come with a clip for the pocket... Well it is sold as a neck knife. That's what ya get here. 2. The paracord that comes with it is junk. No biggie. 3. Not so easy to get sharp 4. I personally don't like the "wire break" or "bottle opener" at the but end of the handle. It tends to annoy my hand while working with the knife. I plan to make a set of scales and fill the end in with platinum gold! Jk. Maybe lead or something. All in all I think this is a great knife for edc or for tactical carry. It has a tendency to raise an eye or two should you wear it visible. Its your life. Also be mindful of your local laws and use common sense

I purchased the BK11 about 9 months ago and literally have worn it every single day since. What a great little knife! It was fairly sharp right out of the package. I changed the profile on the edge slightly to make it just a little sharper but as it is, the blade would be fine for it's intended purpose. The glass-filled nylon sheath is a great little sheath as well. There is absolutely no sign of use on the sheath after wearing it religiously for 9 straight months. I wrapped the handle with 7 strand 550 cord so I'd have access to some cordage in the event of an emergency. I also gutted some more 550 and used it to make the strand that hangs around my neck. If you don't gut this 550, it will be more obvious through your shirt as it will stick out from the sheath by about a 1/4". I'm extremely hard on my tools. I was a little hesitant in purchasing this knife at first because for the price, I wasn't sure if it could stand up to the abuse I was going to put it through. I don't believe I've come close to damaging it and I've put it through quite a bit. Much of the black powder coating has been scraped from the blade so far, but there has yet to be any spots of rust on the exposed 1095. Honestly, I haven't applied oil to the blade even once. I live in a fairly dry place, Reno, NV, so that probably explains a lot of that but at the same time, I wear this knife under my shirt, next to my skin, hanging from my neck for the entire day every day. I also work in Tahoe so I do spend a fair amount of time in a more humid environment on a regular basis. I've hammered this blade through dry wall, cutting chunks out as I go, cut though coax cable with it, pryed on a door to pick my way past it, pryed on numerous other things with it, opened wooden crates, have used it on countless fruits and vegetable, and just about everything else you could imagine having or wanting to cut over a 9 month span of your exciting life. The blade has held up quite well. Last but not least, I made three very small additions to the sheath that I personally find quite valuable. I believe in being prepared for the worst and also find myself going on unplanned hikes in wilderness areas quite frequently. I took some 100 mile-an-hour tape and wrapped it around the sheath a few times. While doing this, I taped a small piece of flintsteel and a small carbide sharpener to the outside edges of the sheath. This has made the sheath slightly wider but you would definitely find those two items to be invaluable were you to find yourself stranded somewhere. The knife is still extremely concealable. All in all, this full-tang neck knife is absolutely 100% worth the money. I've looked around and I truly do not believe there is anything else on the market of equal quality with a similar price. There are some serious bang for your buck here. Buy it.

I was looking for a small EDC fixed blade. I looked hard at Tops Iraq JAC and Bagdad Box Cutter. I looked very closely as the Esse Izula series as well. Obviously I looked at the BK 11, also the 14. In the end, it came down to cost VS quality and that is why I bought the BK11. I paid $35, VS the 60$ to 75$ for the Esse and Tops. For me the BK11 was the better choice when comparing cost against performance. I acknowledge the quality of the other top brands, and I had to buy a 10$ TDI clip so 45$ total to carry it securely. The others have clips on their sheaths. That was part of back and forth between the three. In the end the BK won on a cost to quality ratio. The knife is very nicely finished. It was sharp out of the box but needed stopping to finish the edge. The sheath is excellent, even minus a clip. I like the manual lock on the sheath, others may not. Security is important to me and I know this knife will not be easily taken out of the sheath by others during a scuffle. The blade is thick enough to stand up to semi hard use, has a decent handle length for a small neck/belt EDC blade. I was disappointed in the cost of the Kabar Micarta scales at 30$. I used the cordage to wrap the handle and plan to make my own scales for the blade. Overall I am very happy with this product and I would buy it again and would recommend to others. Knives are very personal items and each person should do their research and then buy whatever fits your needs and budget. I can't imagine anyone hating this knife, its very functionally solid and shouldn't break, bend or lose its tip if used as intended. Bottle opener and wire breaker are nice additions to a good piece of HC steel.

The knife itself deserves FIVE STARS. I just received this knife on Tuesday and now it is Saturday and it’s gone. I purchased a kydex sheath to replace the sheath that comes with the knife but it has not arrived at this time. Another reviewer of this knife suggested purchasing another sheath and I heeded his warning, but THOUGHT I could make the factory sheath work until the new sheath arrived. I love KA BARS, but outside of the leather sheath that comes with the traditional Ka Bars , or their kydex sheaths, the sheaths suck. I own the Ka Bar Fighter; the Army version of the USMC Ka Bar; Bk-16; BK-9; and previously the BK-11. I guess it’s just their Becker brands whose sheaths suck. By another sheath for this BK-11 ASAP if you purchase it. The knife is AWESOME!!!! Update 3/6/2019: My mechanic found it after I called to inquire about dropping it. I picked it up the following Monday after losing it the previous Saturday. My Kydex sheath from AZwelke is on the way. I ordered an additional BK-11 and received it yesterday. All is well in BK-11 Land. 3/17/2020: A year later, this is an awesome knife. I did order Micarta handles for the two Becker Neckers and two kydex sheaths for each. Yes, I could have ordered an Esee Izula for the cost of the knives and the modifications, and the Izulas do look nice, but the 3.25 in. blade of the BK11 makes it worthwhile. The common EDC folders are 3-3.25 inches and I can carry out my EDC tasks with this knife plus it has the bottle opener and wire breaker at the end of the handle. I have upgraded it to five stars despite the sheath but the original sheath sucks, and I do not know if they have upgraded it. The kydex sheaths I ordered are wonderful and do not dull the blade. The knife is worn almost daily without any hassles. Funny, I went through security at a government building because I forgot I was wearing it. I actually got through security without it being detected and I did not realize I had done so until I had sat down and felt it through my shirt-I was truly blessed on that day. That is how comfortable it is to wear around the neck. I highly recommend the BK11.

I love this little knife! Pound for pound and dollar for dollar, you'd be hard pressed to find a better quality blade. The knife: the knife itself is amazing quality. I didn't think I'd like the finish but I really like it. It reminds me of a fine grit Rhino Lining and feels very durable. Have not tried the bottle opener or "wire breaker" yet but I've watched some YouTube videos and the bottle opener seems to work great, but no one can quite figure out the wire breaker. Not an issue though as I didn't buy this knife for that capability, I have a multitool. Lastly, the "stamp" is truly what looks like laser etching into the finish and isn't actually stamped into the blade metal itself. Not a big deal to me, but if your big on a "stamp" for whatever reason, you may be disappointed. The sheath: great quality plastic and the knife fits in like a glove. Some of the videos I've seen show the knife jiggling when fully seated. My unit does not have this issue and when seated is in extremely tight with absolutely no movement. I'm sure it has something to do with being brand new and having a full, non-nicked finish but still no wiggle. I've also tested by viggorously shaking, my arm got tired and the knife happy stayed in place. Also, I included a finger hole in my wrap so I can jerk out of the sheath and it takes a good yank to get it out. The jury is out on the lock, however. It's bulky and while it works, I'm not sure I'll keep it on since the blade is so secure in its sheath already. It is easily removable with one 5/16th wrench. The "550" chord: ok, this is not really 550 chord. It's the only thing that comes with the unit that is not authentic. It's 550 chord material wrapped around what is essentially a shoelace rather than the 7 - 9 strands that make up real 550 chord. As you see in the photos, I used it to do my wrap and I was able to do the wrap and a neck lanyard with what was provided for demo. If you just want a chord for wrapping, solely for the purpose of adding a grip it'll work just fine (as depicted), but if you want a wrap that doubles as reliable chord in a bind, you'll want to get real 550, I'll be switching it out with true 550 chord. Also, if you're new to skeleton style knives and want to wrap yours you can play around with it to make your own or there are plenty of how-to's on YouTube. Again, really nice knife and I can't recommend it highly enough.

This little knife is perfect to wear around the neck. It is very secure in its sheath and still easy to pull out. I have woven the paracord on the handle and it looks cool. I wear the knife with the handle down, and to be safe I secures the knife with a spring rope on the bottle opener (the notch on the back). This is a perfect EDC knife.

No recomiendo este cuchillo para traerle colgado del cuello ya que su tamaño no están discreto.

Das Messer ist gut, angenehm zu benutzen, mit seiner ca. 4mm Klingendicke besonders angesichts der Größe äußerst stabil ausgelegt und doch ein leichtes Messer. Ob einem der Griff mit dem Flaschenöffner beim Necker oder der Griff des Esee Izula beim Becker Eskabar mehr zusagt, muss jeder selber wissen, prinzipiell neigen die meisten Messernutzer dazu den Griff des Eskabar als angenehmer beim Arbeiten zu empfinden. Jeder, der sich ohnehin eine eigene Scheide bauen möchte, kann also zuschlagen. Diejenigen, welche (angesichts des nicht gerade niedrigen Preises für diese Klingengröße) keine Lust haben, weiteres Geld in diesen Kauf zu investieren, sollten sich vielleicht doch woanders umgucken (z.B. das Esee Izula). Grund ist die Scheide, die das Messer so rapide stumpf werden lässt, wie ich es noch bei keinem anderen Messer in Erfahrung bringen konnte. Grund ist das Material, welches mit Glasfasern versetzt ist (kein Kydex!). So verpasste ich dem Messer anfangs einen adequaten Schliff (der Schliff von Kabar ist meist zu grob, mit einem unschönen groben Schleifmuster) mit sehr anständiger Schärfe, sodass es ohne Widerstand durch Papier glitt. Später zog ich das Messer wieder aus Scheide und musste feststellen, dass die Schneide an bestimmten Punkten das Papier fast gar nicht mehr schneiden konnte. Hätte ich das Messer nun vielleicht einen Monat genutzt, wäre dies verständlich. Dass das Messer jedoch bereits beim einmaligen Befördern aus der Scheide in diesem Maße stumpf wird, ist unverzeilich und mindert den Nutzen des Messers erheblich. Ich bin keineswegs die einzige Person mit dieser ärgerlichen Erfahrung, wie man auf zahlreichen Foren nachlesen kann. Sehr schade, es kann nicht sein, dass Kabar dieses Problem nicht bewusst war oder durch Tests nicht in Erfahrung bringen konnten.
