The Works of John Newton (4 Volume Set)

I agree with the earlier two reviewers: this six-volume set of Newton's works is an outstanding collection to own. On almost every page Newton highlights the sovereign grace of God in Christ. As a pastor, this set has brought me conviction, refreshment, and encouragement, as well as motivation to press on in the ministry.In case you were wondering, the font is quite large and easy to read (it is not a microfilm or copy). Of course the punctuation and syntax are a bit dated, but the set is edited and laid out well. There's even a decent Scripture index and topical index at the end of volume six.I realize that a used set might go for over one hundred dollars, but I do believe it is worth that. The letters themselves are perfect for reading one or two per day (meaning this set makes for great devotional reading). And, above all, Newton constantly directs the reader's attention to our loving Savior who abounds in grace towards sinners.

My children bought me this collection for my birthday because they know I love John Newton. These books have been such a blessing to me. The sermons, letters, advice and words of Rev. Newton are as timeless as his famous song Amazing Grace! If you are in need of comfort, blessing and joy - please buy and read this collection - slowly,

You cannot go wrong when purchasing this set. John Newton was a masterful theologian and his works are timeless.

I wish in my Christian walk, that I would have started here thirdly after the Bible and the Westminister standards! Wonderful stuff to daily drink from!

To really understand any person from the past (before voice recordings) you must read what they actually wrote. While eyewitness accounts and researcher's writings may help they can never take the place of the person's actual account written by himself. This is the strength of reading a man such as Newton in his own words. The Banner of Truth set is the most accessible publication of the majority of Newton's writings which are in print. I must admit, I'm still on Volume 1 as of right now but I thought I'd share my thoughts so far.I think I was expecting a much more difficult book to read. I was pleasantly surprised with the accessibility of the writing despite the depth of the content. This is great stuff. It's easy to get caught up in the spiritual "weasel-words" of the day. There are many contemporary authors right now that are writing many excellent things, but it really is refreshing to get a different perspective on spiritual matters. Metaphors and analogies that are unfamiliar but quite striking are riddled through this work.I'll have to provide a follow-up review when I finish this work (hopefully before 2010!) but as of now, I heartily recommend to anyone interested.
