You must calibrate the unit to use it and you technically can use any piece of 14k yellow plumb gold but you might not know if it is plated with anything or something like that, so the calibration disc we sell is a good piece to have because you will know that you are calibrating with the proper piece. The probe does need to be replaced. It can last up to 5000 tests depending on how you use it. **Q: Will plated jewelry pass on the tester or do you need to file the surface to test if its just plated?** A: You need to file the surface. First thing if it is plated and if you know than why test. If you do not know than scratching the surface where the jewelry does not get hurt, pick that area to scratch and test. Plus the instructions on the testers are huge help, provided you follow. **Q: Can you test a gold bar that’s still in its protective assay package without having to open the package?** A: No. The piece being tested needs to make contact with the plate of the tester and you also need to touch the probe to the piece. **Q: does the pen require gell?** A: In the beginning of purchase, it had gel it worked great. I am not using heavily, so over the years the gel dried up, didn't buy any new but when I used last summer,bit was giving me numbers all over. I couldn't pinpoint, if gel was the reason. So I do two things, one a very reliable control to set the control standard. Second thing is I take three readings, and best two I use. Gel does help, but I haven't used, heavily to give definite answer.
