As a result, strict OCIs (oil change intervals) should be observed with this oil, as it is not designed with our high sulfur content/high ethanol content in mind. I spoke to a representative at Liqui Moly about this concern, specifically, and he told me it would be reasonable, but not necessary to switch to the Leichtlauf Special 5W-30, which carries a certification that is more applicable to North American applications. The issue arises with regards to our fuel's interaction with the motor oil, and therefore, premature oil degradation. However, we are talking about an oil that is designed for up to 18,600 miles of normal use. As such, a more conservative OCI of 5-10,000 miles would/should be perfectly reasonable for use with this particular oil, even in North American markets. Longtime High Tech, or Liqui Moly 2039 is indeed a BMW LL- 04 certified oil, and yes, this type of oil is primarily designed for use in European markets where the quality of fuel is much higher than it is in the United States. BMW even goes so far as to warn against use of this oil in North American applications. But we're talking about a company (BMW) which encourages people to change their oil ever 15,000 miles. If you are using an extremely high grade oil like this one, with a high quality European fuel, that might be somewhat reasonable. In the United States, however, true german-grade synthetics are largely unavailable for one thing, and for another, the quality of our fuel is relatively poor (even by second-world standards). As a result, very few oils would be able to prevent degradation for such a long OCI (oil change interval). In summary, while this oil is perhaps not ideal for long term applications in the United States (what oil is?), I would consider it safe to use for 5 - 10K mile OCIs. If carbon is allowed to cycle through the engine it causes a wet sanding effect that grinds away at every surface it touches that is subject to the friction of moving components, which negates and contradicts the purpose of lubrication. Carbon is identified by its distinct black color in the oil and also has a burnt smell to it so the rule of thumb that you should change your oil once it darkens and starts to blacken applies universally to all motor oils. The condition of all the various internal engine components all contribute to the rate at which this occurs and an oil or engine manufacturer cannot possibly predict those specific conditions of any particular engine once it has left the factory floor. Therefor, any manufacturer's attempts to advise a consumer as to when their oil should be changed or the frequency in which it should be changed is a farce and should not be taken as sound advice in preference to the clear indication given by the obvious appearance of your particular engines motor oil, which is easily observed by frequently pulling the dipstick from the tube located under the hood and mounted on the side of every motor vehicle. I recommend taking a moment to check the level and color of it and all of your vehicles other fluids while refueling your vehicle and that you add or change them accordingly.
