In both cases, the small nub of metal at the end of the cable, inside the spring, has separated from the cable. There is no extreme strain on the cable; the lever moves easily into position to engage the blades; the spring is taut, but not stretched; nonetheless, the piece holding the cable-end in place has pulled out, and there is no way to reinsert it. I will now be buying a third cable, from a third vendor, in the hopes of getting one that isn’t defective.
