Denali: A Man, a Dog, and the Friendship of a Lifetime

This is not a story about a man and his dog
By page 33 I couldn't bother with this book. 33 opening pages about this man's hardship growing up as a kid followed by pages of how his marriage didn't work, complaining about his wife, blaming her, so on and so on with a line here and there about his dog Denali. Followed by a chapter titled the dirt bag lifestyle. Seriously? I assume at some point he gets to talking more about his dog, but didn't appreciate the continual complaint about how growing up and marriage is. Not an interesting read at all, I couldn't get passed page 36

Incredibly moving story that everyone needs to read!
Highly recommend to anyone who's found a soul mate with four furry paws, anyone who's battled cancer or knows someone who has, anyone who works in oncology, and everyone else, too. First, grab some tissues. Next, watch his short film, Denali. Then, read this book. I promise it will change the way you look at the world.I know reading Denali made me hold my own pup a little tighter and find motivation to take her on more adventures. As a nurse, this story also helped me relate even more to my patients who are each in very different stages of the cancer battle. Excellent job, Ben!

Amazing
Both heart wrenching and heart warming. The raw honesty of human suffering and resilience touched me to the very core. The love shown by both his dog and his friends were incredible.

An incredible and touching story
Reading about Ben's journey with Denali and beyond was so inspiring. This book is full of beautiful and poignant life lessons and made me think about the connections in life (furry and otherwise) that sustain us through the hard times and the joyous ones. Highly recommend.

Lives well lived
I have viewed the video of Denali numerous times and it's story of life and friendship never cease to touch me. Thus I was excited when I heard about the book wit did not disappoint. The story of Ben and Denali is more than the story of a man and his dog, it is a story that reminds us of the bonds of love and all that it brings to our lives.

Very touching story. I think I'm going to read it again :)
I'll admit, when I first heard this was another book about a man's relationship with his dog I thought it was going to be cheesy. But then I heard about this book a second time when I watched Ben's short film The Lucky Ones and realized there was more to the story. Having been recently diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, and recently learning about what a colostomy bag is, I decided I wanted to learn more about Ben's detailed experience with his health challenges. I had also seen Ben's other short film Denali which was so moving and creative and beautiful that I became even more excited to read this book. It also doesn't hurt that he's an awesome photographer and has worked with phenomenal companies such as Patagonia.I feel lucky that this book came across my radar. It was really impactful for me to read that his stresses and struggles in life - the kind that can constantly give you that pit in the stomach feeling - was correlated to his colon cancer. My colitis was undoubtedly initiated from very stressful circumstances and my doctor also tried to tell me there's no evidence of stress causing colon problems. My doctor also said I'll need to be on medication for the rest of my life.I've got a lot of research to do in the healthcare department... but a big lesson I've taken from this book is to hug my dogs more. I sense a chemical release and relaxation when I do so and it helps me reset and cope with stress. Dogs also have a way of occasionally taking big, deep, relaxing breaths and I look to that as a reminder to do the same.I found a lot of comfort from reading this book and may just have to read it again :)-Lauren C.

Read this book
This is an amazing and heart wrenching story of what it means to love and be loved by a dog. Ben Moon does an incredible job of telling his story through his own eyes as well as the eyes of his dog. You will immediately be engrossed in Ben's story and you won't be able to put this book down.

Man and beast can and must live in gentle harmony
This book is an amazing insight into how a love of a dog and his love for his owner brokered compassion, kindness and fun. It introduces an understanding that man needs this company to keep him humble and always to give back, especially when we are hurting emotionally. Who wouldn’t want to travel with a camper an, a four-legged friend and a surfboard along the coast! It’s a beautiful story and I will become a better person for reading this touching story.
