Works perfectly. Well made. Think instructions through carefully, revising as needed, before proceeding.
Cal-Royal 430P Commercial Grade Door Closer, Size 3 Spring, Aluminum I couldn’t be happier with the final result. I chose a “pull open” installation (body mounted on the jamb above the door) with a right-handed door. Any of the other three “regular arm” options would have been very similar. I don’t know about the “parallel arm” option. Our installation was unusual in that the vertical faces of the door and jamb are in the same plane. We didn’t test to see how much difference could be accommodated by the adjustment on the forearm.Installation took about an hour for two people, including tool selection and clean-up. Having worked before with door closers, however, I insisted that my colleague and I first study and discuss the instructions and templates until we understood how the unit worked and why it is to be installed as it is. I had already spent about an hour by myself, and then we two spent another 45 minutes or so, agreeing on what I had previously thought and marking up the most applicable part of the template for our installation option. We agreed that:(1) The unit I received was model 440, even though I ordered a 430, Amazon and the seller say they sent me a 430, and the unit has a sticker inside saying “430.” This distinction is important because, as the instructions make clear, the two models are different sizes and are to be mounted at different horizontal positions on the door or jamb.(2) The figures in the instructions are not always clear as to what line is being dimensioned vertically: is it the top of the door of the bottom of the jamb? There’s typically only 1/8 inch or less between these two, and that seems not to matter. Just saying. Furthermore, a couple of vertical dimensions on these figures don’t agree with the layout of the template. We ended up choosing our own vertical layout based on common sense, using the instructions and template only as a guide.(3) The horizontal layout of the unit is critical, and here the instructions are hard to second guess unless you are very good with articulated arms. We are not, so we followed the instructions for “door opening more than 120 degrees” with only one tweak: If you look carefully, small figures in the instructions are horizontally dimensioned to the center of the hinge pin, whereas the text says to measure to the edge of the door. In our case, the two differ by 1/4 inch, and I think the hinge pin is the correct reference. It’s only a 1/4 inch, but on the other hand, the instructions are precise to 1/32 inch for horizontal placement, so we carefully measured to the center of the pin.As I said, the result is great. The door opens wide and closes just as we want. Based on our success, I recommend the following steps. These apply to all four standard options, but not necessarily to the parallel arm option.First, read and digest instructions thoroughly. Make sure your buddy does, too. Installation is much easier for two people. Understand what your are doing and why. Don’t proceed until everything makes sense. Be prepared to revise your understanding of which model you received and to override the instructions as needed.Second, work out and mark vertical placement on the most applicable template, using instructions only as a guide. Among the important considerations: Will the articulated arm move freely without bending or binding or added stress? Will the arm hit the door or the jamb? Will the body attach to solid wood in the jamb or door? Will the forearm attach to solid wood in the jamb or door?Third, follow the instructions precisely regarding horizontal placement unless you have a very good reason not to. Take care to dimension to the center of the hinge pin, not the edge of the door. Our door is excessively thick (2.3”), and I concluded that, owing to the geometry of the articulation, the extra thickness would not matter much, and it doesn’t seem to. Follow the directions. Finally, let me defend my rating of 5 stars in vew of the issues above. First, in my experience, most door closers confound installers. This one is no exception. Second, I received an unannounced free upgrade from 430 to 440. Rarely, I guess, would this substitution cause a problem, as long as it is recognized! Third, this unit is solid and works perfectly, so far, for a good price. If it breaks down, I’ll be back.

Good closer but takes a lot of force to open. I recommend a smaller size for most people.
This is a pretty nice door closer. It closes the door firmly but doesn't allow it to slam. I have mine set up with the bulky part on the door and the little arm above it (which, I think, is the standard configuration) but it can be set up on either side and even under the door jamb. Good quality materials and workmanship and the little adjustment screws make a big difference in how fast or slow the door shuts. Should be configurable for almost any taste. The main thing about this closer that was unexpected and possibly a negative for some is that it puts a lot of pressure on the door. After installing it, I tried the door and thought it was fine but my wife came over and couldn't comfortably open it with one hand. The kids (ages 2-6) can't seem to open it at all so far. This item puts a lot more closing pressure than most door closers. If you have kids or wimpy people going through the door, I'd suggest going with one with a smaller spring. The internet says spring size 3 corresponds to 5 pounds of closing force. Either this is a bit higher than that or five pounds is more than we think it is. I'd suggest spring size 2 or even 1 for most people based on my experience with this product. The arm also rubs across the top of the door, but that would be the fault of the installer (me). I was so worried about the two connections being too far apart that I put them too close together. I'll have to adjust my installation.By the way installation was fine. My only issue was that it turns out my door is metal stuffed with styrofoam. I could have sworn it was wood. Anyway, the instructions are all snooty and say you have to tap metal doors for machine screws. I have never even seen a tool to do that. I used the regular screws and it works, but some day it will probably fall on my head or something. Maybe they could figure out a better way to attach to metal doors--one that doesn't require fancy tools.

It works great, but the instructions wete terrible.
It was difficult to install because the instructions wete poorly written . I went on YouTube to find out how to install it. It works well, and I enjoy not hearing the door slam!

Great door closer
Great door closer. Works perfectly for a solid heavy entrance door on emergency staircase.I bought this along with a different door closer that I believed to be more rugged and was surprised to find the foot print of this one was the only one that worked. There is a window on my door and it fits right above it without issue. The other door closer doesn't make it without covering the window. It's easy to adjust the swing and speed as well.Overall, great product and a surprisingly superior than others I had on hand.

A breeze to install!
This was a lot easier to install than I thought it was going to be. Some people made it out to be a two person job, but I followed the template that was provided and installed the thing in about 30 minutes by myself. I've never installed one of these before, but the template made installation very simple and quick! I just taped it to the door where the template outlined, then drilled the holes. As for the door closer itself, I was able to easily calibrate the hydraulic cylinder so the door would close and latch every time. Now my door doesn't slam shut when entering/exiting the garage! This is very useful to me since I have two kids under the ages of 3 years. Now the door won't slam on fingers (had already happened before) and won't wake up a sleeping baby if we forget to gently close the door.I recommend this for anybody who has a heavy, solid garage door that likes to slam shut.EDIT: after ownership for a few months, the hinge has a high pitched squeal when opening/closing. I'm going to try adding wd40 to the moving parts and hopefully the sound will go away, but if it doesn't, I'll be docking a star.
