Japanese for All Occasions: Mastering Speech Styles from Casual to Honorific

First off, I appreciate that Kodansha did not make yet another book with a bunch of annoying romanized text (my biggest pet peeve about Japanese language books). Instead, this book not only uses furigana, but also drops it when a kanji recurs in the same dialog. This helps kanji recognition and reading speed.The format of this book is situation-based, in contrast to the grammatical concept approach of most textbooks, so the lessons can be better integrated into real everyday use more quickly. Make sure to use the audio CD, obviously. It surprises me how hard it is to find good resources that bridge the gap between serious language lessons and everyday phrasebooks. I personally have no interest in passing a test, but would like to both serious understand the language and understand what people around me are actually saying in real life.I just started with this, but I know enough Japanese already to recognize that this approach has quite a bit of potential. I dread doing Genki exercises, so this is a welcome change of pace.

I like this book as it is oriented towards Japanese conversation in real life (mostly). It was fun to mimic the conversations with a friend as well! I would highly-recommend for beginners.

For all lover s of 日本語の勉強。。。I highly recommend this book. I absolutely love it!!!!! It doubles as a learners aid as well as a novel I can browse at my leisure...

It has helped me move past the Intermediate to Advanced portions of Japanese etiquette. I greatly like this book, and I LOVE that there is NO ROMAJI!!!! If you ever want to proficient in writing Japanese, having texts that don't have that crutch are a blessing!!!!Would recommend this to anyone who wants to get a better understanding of the nuances in the Japanese speaking system.

Dieses kleine und rasch zu lesende Buch mit Begleit-CD kann aus folgenden Gründen eine grossartige Ergänzung zu anderen Japanisch-Lehrbüchern sein:Auch wenn die Japaner immer glaubhaft beteuern, dass sie uns Ausländern die üblichen sprachlichen Faux-pas nicht übel nehmen (bei Halb-Japanern ist man übrigens nicht so nachsichtig...), möchte man sich dennoch nicht immer wie ein Trampel vorkommen unter so ausserordentlich höflichen Mitmenschen.Ein noch wichtigeres Argument ist, dass man in Japan als Tourist (und somit Kunde) analog zum Vorgesetzten, Lehrer oder anderweitig hierarchisch Oberen, immer im "Keigo", der superhöflichen Sprache, angeredet wird, welche üblicherweise erst ab der unteren Mittelstufe unterrichtet wird. Es wäre schade, diese elegante und sehr würdevolle Sprachform nicht zu verstehen, ausserdem bereitet damit der Umgang mit dem japanischen Dienstleistungswesen - dem ausgeklügeltsten und professionellsten der Welt - noch grösseres Vergnügen.Initial werden zuerst Wortgruppen und Sätze eingeführt, im weiteren Verlauf werden typische kleine Dialoge mit grosszügigen Kommentaren, englischer Übersetzung und Furigana-Überschrift gebracht. Je nach Setting (Familie, Freunde, Vorgesetzter, Mann/Frau, Kunde/Verkäufer, usw.) wechselt somit der Sprachstil. Wer mag, kann noch ein paar Übungen machen, der Lösungsschlüssel ist integriert.An dieser Stelle sei noch eine allgemeine Kritik an dem klassischen Sprachunterricht an sich ausgesprochen: Die wenigsten Lehrer/Autoren haben den Mut, bzw. die Ein- oder Weitsicht, das Lernmaterial in passiv und aktiv zu unterscheiden. Keigo, beispielsweise, kommt wie gesagt erst relativ spät im Lehrplan dran, obwohl man als Reisender ständig damit konfrontiert wird. Dann wird aber sogleich erwartet, dass man es aktiv beherrschen soll, obwohl die wenigsten Lernenden je in Japan arbeiten werden. Ich denke, es ist wichtig, die Formen zu erkennen und zu verstehen, ausschweifende Übungssequenzen darf man aber getrost überspringen. Jemand, der in Japan berufstätig sein möchte, müsste sich mit dem Keigo ohnehin über viele Monate intensiv befassen, bzw. viele heuern in dieser Situation einen Privatlehrer an.

I'm currently studying Japanese and have just begun learning Keigo (Genki Book 2). I've been searching for additional examples/scripts of Keigo in usage with audio accompaniment at native speed. Japanese for All Occasions is a good complement for your existing study materials for elementary-intermediate level students who have already mastered Hiragana/Katakana and can recognise basic Kanji.The book has a nice easy format of scripted situations (i.e. asking a taxi driver about landmarks) which are followed by explanations of the specific format of speech (casual or honorific) and then also some exercises are provided. Overall I've been using this book more as exercise material to read/listen and work with in conjunction with the Audio CD. The explanations are quite brief and it's best for someone that's already begun learning keigo and just wants more material to practise with.
