Does this compass need the pencil to be fed through & then the screw tightened up to hold it in place? How nay spare leads are there?

My sons says the pencil is already in it and tightened up . He got no extra leads with his set .

Good set at a reasonable price. Box was broken hence only 4 stars. I appreciate this probably happened during delivery and now all the pieces have been decantered into a carry case.
