It's a Laser Ruler & Guide. The sliding guide is set to the square size desired and the laser light points the way. Cardstock/paper is placed on the board in a horizontal and vertical position to get the square. The light will guide the placement of marks to make the size of square you want. **Q: I'm considering this to use as a guide for keeping my handwriting straight when writing on unlined paper. Will it work?** A: Yes. The only caution I would give is that the "pointer" is a bit flimsy and needs to be straightened with each use (no big deal) and the brightness of the line "fades" some toward the end of the line. While my original plan was to use it for writing notes, the 6"x6" limited work surface was not really conducive for anything but a short memo. First, I was disappointed to realize that batteries are not included, and then had to wait another 2 days to use it because I had to order a 9 volt battery. Who uses 9V batteries anymore? When my batteries finally arrived, I turned on the laser, only to discover that it doesn’t line up with the grid lines on the surface. What good is a laser square if the laser isn’t actually square? I didn’t buy this to have all the items on my cards at a slight angle. Very disappointed, there should be better quality control than this.
