The device simulates a keyboard. It simulates key presses of the media keys present on some keyboards and most laptops (whether you have them on your keyboard or not). When turned it simulates the volume media keys, and when pressed it simulates the mute toggle media key. Unless you have media keys disabled somehow, it should just work on most computers for its intended purpose. If you're trying to do something else with it you'll have to have software that either captures those simulated keypresses and performs whatever action you're looking at, or something at the OS level to remap the keys its sending. If you're on windows you might take a look at autohotkey. There are lots of ways to do it on Linux, but it really depends what you're trying to do and what flavor of Linux you're running. It is relatively easy to program, although the manual does not explain it well. You can program it using nothing but Notepad (a text editor that comes with Windows), and assign any of 200+ possible actions to different controller inputs.
