Some you love; some you hate
I'll give no spoilers here because Scott loaned me an Advanced Reader's Copy at the beginning of the summer, but suffice it to say this book has a plot that moves as fast as the ship on which the action takes place. The cast of characters is diverse, each with his/her quirks. Some you love; some you hate. The games and tests the kids go through are clever--and there are many games.About fifty pages from the end the action sort of dies down for a few pages, then races to the last ten pages. When all seems nice and comfy and all the loose ends are tied back together, the rug is yanked one more time for the final pages. I loved it.I am thankful I was able to read the novel before actual publication (I did pre-ordere it), and my only complaint is having to wait a year or two for book two.I can't wait to get this book in my classroom to put into kids' hands. It is refreshing to also see a local author and friend have early success in the very tough industry of novel publishing.Don't read this in three days like I did (275 pages in one sitting), for you'll just long for the second book even sooner. Sigh. Congrats, Mr. Reintgen. You deserve every accolade coming to you for writing such a great story.

This was a really cool futuristic book.
Penguin First-to-Read ARC & NetGalley ARCThis was a really cool futuristic book. We've found life on other planets and also a substance that could change everything. On the planet of Eden, a race called Adamites mine a substance called nyxia. Nyxia does a lot of things, it can be manipulated through thought but as they learn more about it, they learn it can also manipulate. There is much to be feared from this substance that seems to have a mind of its own when it wants to. It can be formed into weapons, medicine, buildings, clothing, etc. Only a nyxia wound cannot be healed by nyxia. The Adamites seem to have a distaste for adults so a group of teenagers are competing for spots on Eden to mine nyxia and bring it back to Earth. They learn to work with each other and with nyxia and also learn many secrets of their benefactor company, Babel, along the way. The book was very intriguing and stayed that way the entire time. I'm so impatient for the second book and this isn't even out yet!

What a ride...
In a word: Wow.This is by far the most ethnically inclusive mainstream YA sci-fi book I've ever read. It tells the story of an African American young man named Emmett who is recruited by a mysterious corporation and promised a LOT of money for completing a top secret mission on a distant planet. The fine print: while en route, he'll have to compete against nine other recruits--all from different countries--in a series of physically and mentally excruciating tasks to secure one of eight spots on the final mission team. The beauty of this story, though, isn't solely rooted in the diversity of the characters. What really made it a hit for me is that despite the fact that all the recruits come from different countries/cultures, the main conflict really hinges on the one thing all the characters have in common. (I won't say what it is because trying to stay spoiler-free.)I've never read a book that manages to illustrate the complexity of human motivations while simultaneously keeping the pages turning. Not only could I not put it down... when I got to the end, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Every time Emmett was faced with a moral dilemma--and there were many--I found myself torn. Every single time. There were no easy answers. And that was my favorite aspect of the story. The depth. The complexity of each character. The constant battle between doing whatever it takes to earn a place on the final team, and maintaining a sense of self and personal integrity. If I could give it six stars, I would.

Amazing story
Sooo good! This is the first book I’ve Read by Scott Reingten. I really loved the story, it was unique and the characters are amazing and detailed, they had depth and I love that. I connected with them I feel their pain and happiness and joy sadness on the rough journey they had to go through for Babel. To obtain a prize that they were promised, to live rich forever. All they have to do is compete against each other and gain points to come out on top and go to Eden. Only so many can go so it’s pretty cut-throat.It was absolutely amazing story and I’m really excited to read the next book

Great read
This was a great book to read. The story line reminded me of a mix between the book Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card and the movie Avatar with the training and competition between children in space where they are training for their interaction with an alien species and the adults in charge of the training are sending the children down to a habited alien planet where they are expected to mine valuable resources that the aliens are not fond of sharing.

much like the alluring and powerful substance that the book is ...
I just finished Nyxia over a period of 4 days while on vacation. It had a compelling draw that wouldn't let me put it down, much like the alluring and powerful substance that the book is about. Science fiction fans, this book is for you. Action junkies, it's also for you. An avid reader? You'll appreciate the skillful writing. As a thirty year old father who clearly enjoyed it as well, Nyxia has something for everyone. With a captivating story, engaging characters that are easy to root for, set in a mysterious future world that has yet to be explored, it's a good thing that Book 2 is already out! I get the feeling that the Nyxia trilogy will be a part of our culture for a very, very long time.

Ender’s Game + Hunger Games, with a mission
Well written, paced, with a deep thesis wrought by political and financial theories of the future of space exploration, with the requisite awesome tech to keep the slate of differentiated characters interesting throughout. The great accomplishment is the diversity of characters and voices, especially of Emmet, the protagonist. The author’s on a mission to spotlight the strengths of diversity and hits the bullseye there.

Excellent read
This book just gets better and better. I mean the ending, just, omg. But as this is a spoiler free review I will leave you with that tantalising tease 😉I feel like this is more of a 4.5 star book, as it is a really good sci fi thriller. I loved the team of genesis 11, and really felt their ups and downs. And I want to know more about Babel and what does happen to those not going to Eden, and just everything!Next book right now please! 😍📚

A touch of the Hegamon world but not.
To say that this story reeks of Orson Scott Card’s Hegamon is to do an injustice to an independent storyline that really hums along and drags the reader along. Emmitt is our flawed hero who along with a number of other characters is tasked with winning a place in a team destined to reach a planet. That’s very basic but to get the most from this read that is as much as you need to know. Just read this, the first in this series and you will be hooked.

Good book
This book was a lot like Red Rising by Pierce Brown, and a lot different from it too. A really good sci-fi novel with a lot of potential for exploring its plot and characters more.Just an FYI: Amazon has mentioned Michael Joseph as the publisher for book 1 here, but it's incorrect. Book 1 on Amazon is from Penguin (smaller size) and book 2 is by Michael Joseph. So get ready to have inproportainately sized books! This happened with the Legend series also. Seriously, Amazon? Give me same size/cover books.

Amazing ! A Must-Read for Everyone
Absolutely this book was addictive and intriguing till the end , Scott Reintgen didn't break my heart , I suspected that the book will be nice or not when I looked at the price , clearly the tests, the relationships with the others , the conspiracies , the heartbroken , the betrayals and the brawls all was mixed very beautifully with clear emotions and feelings , At last I would say it's not a waste of money and keeps you hooked until end !
