Gun Digest Shooter's Guide to Handguns

Ideal all-around intro to guns & shooting
I've read a few of these Gun Digest books and they are definitely not created equal. (Actually, my gripe is with the series editor, not the authors: the different books in the series seem to assume very different levels of experience from their readers). However, Cunningham's Shooter's Guide to Handguns is one I can wholeheartedly recommend. There isn't a single thing about it that I would change; it really is an ideal intro to both guns themselves and to shooting. It even covers things like options for safely storing your guns, etc. It answers all of the questions a new shooter has probably wanted to ask, as well as some s/he would probably never have thought to ask. This one is so good that I actually read it three times: Before I purchased my first gun, once while I was in the waiting period for my gun, and again about 6 months after I had gotten my first gun and started shooting it. I got quite a bit of new stuff out of it on each reading. I had other books, but just kept coming back to this one.Another book I strongly recommend for new shooters is The Perfect Pistol Shot by Albert H League III. Staying within this Gun Digest Shooter's Guide series, I did really enjoy Gun Digest Shooter's Guide to Handgun Marksmanship by Peter Lessler. However, the latter book is probably a lot more detail than a brand new shooter really needs; Albert League's book is a better intro (in my opinion) to the fundamentals.

Excellent general handgun book for the post-novice
The book has an excellent summary of different cartridge sizes, Also, each chapter has a list of resources if you want to learn about subject matter in more detail. Another Gun Digest book I would recommend is the Guide to Concealed Carry Handguns by Dick Jones, 2015 ( https://www.amazon.com/Digest-Guide-Concealed-Carry-Handguns/dp/1440243883/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1467514228&sr=8-11&keywords=gun+digest+book+of+concealed+carry ), which has a comparison of the major handguns currently available (even full size handguns that one would not buy to carry), with recommendations. One disagreement I had with the book is when it discusses correct fit. It shows how the gun fits correctly if it lines up straight along the axis of the arm, which I suppose is something to pay attention to. But when you're pointing the gun naturally, along eyesight line of sight, the gun will generally point toward the outside, especially using two-handed gun shooting techniques. Another excellent book from the same publisher, the Gun Digest Book of the Revolver (https://www.amazon.com/Digest-Book-Revolver-Grant-Cunningham/dp/1440218129/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467515154&sr=8-1&keywords=gun+digest+book+of+the+revolver ), makes the same assertion. That guidance will help the reader avoid buying a gun too large for his or her hand, but I think it would be better to buy your first gun with an unbiased salesman providing guidance,

Good information
Seems to be a good book with a great many topics covered. I haven't had time to read it thoroughly, but in a quick browse, I found two things:1. Not a lot of in depth coverage on all of the topics (what I was looking for)2. Hand guns were not covered, as well as Rifles and Shot Guns .I'm new to guns and had hoped this book would relieve my apprehension about the proper care and maintenance of weapons. It has been informative, but I still feel apprehensive about cleaning and care. But, maybe I just need more experience for that feeling to go away.

Wiki for the gun owner
This well written book provides in depth information about how to buy, shoot, clean, think about, carry, use and everything else about handguns. The best feature is the myriad of crystal clear photographs illustrating the text, a feature that is sadly missing in many other books. In addition to the vast amount of practical information, the author also spends some time explaining how the gun works in a technical manner that satisfied my techie-side. Historical background of many gun features are truly a plus, as is the extensive reference section for each chapter, which gives references and further reading for the enthusiast or those that thirst for more.If I were to recommend a single book as a must read for the gun owner, this would be the one.

99% score
I was looking for a book on handguns for a novice. This book met my needs 99%. The one thing I would have liked is a diagram of both a revolver and a semi-auto with all the internal part labled. The author discusses many of those parts but many names are unfamiliar - such as the "sear".

Another excellent book by Grant Cunningham
This is the second book I have purchased by Grant Cunningham, and am as happy with this one as his first one focusing on revolvers. His writing is informative without being wordy, and easy to understand. I am not a beginner when it comes to handguns, and I find new information in these books very useful and good to know. The pictures are great also, with many nice guns being featured. I highly recommend this book to add to your gun book collection, it's a great read and source of knowledge.

Exciting way to learn more
Educating yourself is the key to increase knowledge and tolerates for any given subject. This boo will give you the low down on anything handgun related and will help you determine which handgun is right for you. If you are not aware of any gun terms, then it maybe hard to understand in some chapters. However, the book is amazing and worth giving it a shot. No pun intended.

Four Stars
My only disappointment was lack of information about Sig Sauer pistols; otherwise contained useful introductory information.

One for the collection
As a firearms enthusiast this is a must for all like-minded individuals. Plenty of food for thought and certainly gives you great overview of what's out there (even though we can't actually buy one!). Will be ordering more titles from this range very soon and already have the one on marksmanship.
