Learned a lot by reading the book
I read this book because my son is about to enter the media business and wanted me to understand his professional environment. And being a computer networking geek I always wanted to learn about the business side of content distribution. This book met and exceeded both my goals. By reading this book I learned about how the different business entities of the media world interact and how they share the revenues generated by a piece of media. I see that the author is planning to release a new edition of this book this fall. I hope that the new edition is focused more on the online media distribution model. Will the online studios being established by the likes of Amazon, Netflix and Google change the way media is distributed and revenue shared between the different players?

This book is not for the squeamish! It is ...
This book is not for the squeamish! It is a bonafide tome unless you are using it in conjunction with a course in college with this as your textbook. That having been said you'd be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive book about what has worked, what is emerging in the Entertainment industry related to distributed content and who to work with and what to do with material you've licensed or own! It even gives a number of case studies to help you understand the context of a lot of tactics and strategies.

For newbie film-makers and others breaking into the business
This book is a slow read, but for a great reason: it's *packed* with information in every paragraph that can help set your mind racing on how to best apply what you learn to your situation. I recommend this to every aspiring film-maker, because making movies is a business, and understanding how things work will greatly help film-makers survive to do what they love and do best. For this first time, a detailed textbook lifts the veil on the mysterious and often irrational world of media. The writing is sturdy, neither stuffy nor flashy. And the author is clearly an authority. You can't miss with this book.

This book is a great overall guide to media distribution
This book is a great overall guide to media distribution. I worked for a company who was in the film distribution business and this book covers the ins and outs of the industry. Variety usually puts out thorough books that are all encompassing, thus I was not surprised at how carefully thought out this one was. I would recommend it for someone who is just getting into the business or a seasoned professional who wants to stay on top of the business.

ultimate gets
Whether you are experienced entertainment industry participant or intend to become one, you definitely need to read this book. Going through each page, you may easily find that you knew a lot before reading this book (of course only if you have background in theory and in practice/business), and still you will be thankful to the author for structuring all those info-jungles into an easy to walk through pedestrian way...

Great Source of Information
I little dated, but still a great source of information. I'm hoping the author will come out with a new edition.

Good work
Neat book. I'm finishing my master in Communication and Broadcasting working on a dissertation about non linear television and I found Mr Ulin's chapters about television distribution and video on demand updated and insightful.

Essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the movie business
I've read quite a few books on the movie economics but none of them has broken down the actual business nearly as analytically and honestly as this book. For the first time, I am actually feeling some sympathy for the Hollywood studios. It is a risky business they're in, and this book shows that regardless what we may feel about the artistic quality of most films produced by the studios, they still play a vital part in the moviemaking ecosystem.I can't rate this book too highly - if you're in the business of independent film production get hold of a copy of this book - after reading this, you'll be able to make a realistic business plan, perhaps for the first time, no matter how long you've worked with film.
