Amazing artwork.
Absolutely beautiful artwork and content. This may be the best RPG art ever produced. Honestly it is worth owning for that alone. The fact that the game content is so well done is just a bonus.

Not for PCs! Keepers only!
Beautiful, if not short, book. Please be aware this is a campaign book. I bought it assuming it had tons pages of history of the era and area. That said, if you are a Keeper, 2 decent campaigns are inside. You can play separately or as flashback scenarios with Horror on the Orient Express.

Another Strange Aeon
I was pleased to see with the new edition of Call of Cthulhu that there has been an effort to publish more adventures in unusual times and places. The game system and the background mythos have always been easily portable and it keeps players on their toes to transport the game somewhere different than the traditional 1920's setting. I was therefore looking forward to Reign of Terror, set as it is during the French Revolution.Sadly though Reign of Terror suffers from an error made by lots of historical scenarios in that it is gets very carried away with the settings and forgets about the story. The production of Reign of Terror is first class with some beautiful maps and colour plates of historic paintings really setting the mood. The new art produced to illustrate the adventure is sadly not as impressive and does little to invoke an atmosphere of horror. A good portion of the book is taken up by background detail, allowing you to use it as a guide to further adventures during the Revolution. The adventure itself is split into two parts, with a five year gap in between. Pre-generated characters are provided, casting the player characters in the role of soldiers. This is always problematic in any scenario as chain of command removes a lot of the freedom players would expect in any RPG.This adventure is no exception with the PC's being ordered from A to B to C with little choice of their own. There is no mystery or investigation to be done in this adventure, it relies entirely on the uniqueness of the setting and hopes players will buy into it enough not to notice. The gap between the two halves of the adventure is the weakest point. It exists only because of the writers wish to include different historical events that happen years apart. Players and GM are left to fill in the gap with the PC's actions and decisions having no affect on the main story.Sadly then the overall adventure is definitely not a classic. There is little freedom of action, no investigation worth mentioning and nothing particularly horrific or frightening in what is being described. If you have a particular interest in this period it may be worth picking up for the background detail provided but the adventure as it stands needs a lot of work to make it of any real interest to players.
