The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

This poem is my albatross —Written as a sea-shanty, this fun, fast-paced poem glides through the readers imagination like the very ship that is depicted. Utilizing surreal imagery and religious thematics, this lofty poem is an absolute joy to dance through.Presumably based on the ancient Jewish story of the lonely wanderer, this breathtaking journey through the emerald ice of Antarctica will lift the reader into the ethereal realm, where concepts dance like the northern light.Although old, this poem retains a hint of freshness. I would recommend this to anyone who is familiar with classic poetry, just as I would recommend it to anyone who has never read of a poem in their life. The profundity of the concepts are beautifully accentuated by the childlike syntax of the prose, which make for an incredible story that anyone can find value in.10/10

I bought this for Christabel and I'm glad I finally got a chance to read it. I found it to be a bit racier than I expected! A quick (non-racy) excerpt to peak your interest:---------------------------------------Hush, beating heart of Christabel!Jesu, Maria, shield her well!She folded her arms beneath her cloak,And stole to the other side of the oak.What sees she there?---------------------------------------But of course The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the star of this show. It is loaded with familiar lines, lines that take on real meaning in context of the overall poem. Best I can do is an excerpt:---------------------------------------I closed my lids, and kept them close,And the balls like pulses beat;For the sky and the sea, and the sea and the skyLay like a load on my weary eye,And the dead were at my feet.The cold sweat melted from their limbs,Nor rot nor reek did they:The look with which they looked at meHad never passed away.An orphan's curse would drag to hellA spirit from on high;But oh! more horrible than thatis the curse in a dead man's eye!---------------------------------------(And you thought that was from some pirate movie!) That is far from the most famous line in the poem, and if the poem is new to you, you may be surprised by familiar lines as you come across them. There are other poems in this volume with lines as memorable, if not as famous.There is quite a lot in this little volume and for $2 it is a steal, especially if you qualify for free shipping!

Truly classical works.

I have always loved the poem, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", ever since having it as an assignment in high school, and was pleased to find this edition in the Kindle store.Coleridge was a big influence of the romantic period and I didn't know that he was also an influential literary critic of his time.This book is set up to present his works in chronological order and there is some nice background info to give you some further history of the man.He was one of the greats, so I don't think anyone should be disappointed.

Dover thrift always does it right in my eyes. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is one of my favorite pieces of literature and the note included are helpful for first time readers and 500th time readers.

A great poem and a must read for any one who works on the sea. I thought this was a neat find. It was very cheap but fun to read and great conversation piece. Very fragile but it is old. I wish a publisher would release something like this again that could hold up in your pocket.

Coleridge' s best work is set in this very cheap Dover book. And Samuel T. Did write more than just the Ancient Mariner. His body work is impressive. If you want more of Colerige after reading this which is a great into into his work, you can great get his complete works for 99 cents from another company on Amazon. Little black books. But great value if you want complete works.

Read when I was younger in grade school and again in college. Great tale to go back to. I've been reading to my 7 and 10 year old as little clips at night to try to get them inspired.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is an incredible poem. Haunting and thrilling, it captivated the reader with its superlative descriptive writing. Coleridge describes the endless sea from the vastness of icy Antartica to the smooth tropical seas. The mariner has visions of sea monsters and Death, who plays a dice game in which Death wins the lives of his ship's crew. The mariner recounts a nightmare voyage to the South Pole from which he alone survives to tell the tale.

This was a cheap quick way to get the text for my daughter's school work but the print is very small even for a young person.
