Q: Can I vary the distance between the bars in order to accomodate my existing cargo box?

There are fixed mounting points on the SUV itself, so the bars can only be attached there. Don't know if that means your existing cargo box is unusable however.

Q: Do these go to the base vehicle, or are there optional rails that have to be in place first?

These fit on the base vehicle CRV 2002-2006 any trim level; if you look at the CRV's roof molding you will see some removable caps that are taken off for installation of the carrier

We put about 100 evenly across the roof

I believe per rail. I haven’t had any issues hauling a 100lb kayak around. Been 2 years and nothing wrong with them yet.
