You do not - need - to buy it. However, you may still want to buy it if you plan to use the router above table. To eliminate the hassle of installing the router’s base which comes with the router (with the two handles) under the router table, and later having to convert it back for non-table use, Bosch offers the optional RA1165 under table Router Base. The RA1165 base (that is sold separately) is designed to be permanently attached your router table, leaving the router base that comes with the router ready for non-table use. Wish other router manufactures got smart and did this too.

Q: I have a porter cable 4216 dove tail jig does this work with it or do i need to purchase optional bases with it?

I am not sure about that but with enough duct tape, screws, epoxy, and good old American ingenuity, anything is possible! Seriously though, i know there are multiple screw holes in the base plate, but whether or not they will line up to your Porter cable jig, i am not entirely sure. I do know this is a great router, its the first one I have owned, but not the first I have used. Plenty of power for bigger bits and smooth precise adjustments, easy to handle and manipulate. Quieter than alot of others I have used.

The 1617EVS has an option of using either three 10-24 machine screws or four 4 mm machine screws, the length will vary depending on the thickness of the mounting plate and table.
