The ink is fairly translucent, like any watercolor, so it would be best to prime with white paint. Bought these for my daughter who has just started secondary school. Her mum is a good artist but my daughter tries but can be better. Pens are brilliant quality and a fascinating idea. They come along with a really good tutorial artist quality pad, she loved the video tutorials on you tube, although she was constantly rewinding, she got there and her first drawing, amazingly, virtually matched the tutorial drawing. I cant draw to save myself but had to have a bash and i actually managed to draw something that was recognisable. Totally amazed. One suggestion, maybe its just me but my daughter agreed, I think it would be easier to follow the tutorial if someone was speaking rather than reading and trying to draw at the same time.
