## Overview

SureFire EP7 Sonic Defenders Ultra are premium, reusable earplugs crafted in the USA from hypoallergenic polymer. Featuring a 28dB Noise Reduction Rating with advanced filter caps, they protect hearing while allowing safe ambient sound. Their soft memory-foam Comply Canal Tips and patented EarLock retention rings provide all-day comfort and a secure, consistent fit. Designed low-profile for compatibility with helmets, masks, and headsets, these earplugs are perfect for concerts, shooting ranges, and noisy environments where hearing protection meets clarity.

## Description

EP7 Sonic Defenders Ultra protect your hearing without interfering with your ability to hear routine sounds or conversations. Their foam-tipped stem design, featuring soft memory-foam Comply Canal Tips, fits most people and provides a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 28dB. Sounds, at safe levels, are allowed to pass through into the ear canal, while potentially harmful noises (above 85dB) are reduced via a proprietary design that incorporates a special noise-reducing filter. EP7s include attached filter caps, which can be inserted for additional protection and blocking out lower-level noise, like that heard on a plane, in situations where hearing ambient sounds or conversations isn't critical. Right/left color-coded Sonic Defenders Ultra are made from a soft but durable, hypoallergenic polymer that provides all-day comfort and an extended product life (up to 6+ months, depending on usage and care). Their patented EarLock retention rings lock the earplugs in place, while soft foam-tipped stems provide secure seals in the ear canals. And their low-profile design means they can be worn while wearing a helmet or mask, or while using a phone or headset. Available in clear, black, or orange. Comfortable EP7 Sonic Defenders Ultra also serve as earpieces for compatible radio communication systems simply by removing the noise-reducing filter and attaching the earpiece to the system. * RADIO COMM SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY: Thales: Covert Security Harness; Harris: Security Force Communication Set; Motorola: Surveillance Kits; Tactical Command Industries: Tactical Earpiece Products; Peltor: Lightweight Systems-Hearplug; Silynx: C4Ops Headset. NOTE: EP7 earpiece will not provide hearing protection if the noise-reducing filter is removed.

Review: Foam are MUCH better! - Let me start by saying that I've used the Surefire ear plugs for almost 2 years now for under my motorcycle helmet when I'm riding. I don't use them at the gun range or anything else other than wind noise. When first going with the Surefire's I bought a set of MEDIUM EP4's. These have the rubber "Christmas tree-like" ear pieces. I really like this product and, at first, they fit my ear very well. Unfortunately, they would move around when turning my head with my helmet on. It got to the point that I couldn't keep them in place. Since the ear piece that goes around the ear is great I figured to try a LARGE and ordered the EP3's. These have the same style outer piece, only larger, and a somewhat differently-shaped, rubber ear canal piece. Looks like a tiny mushroom only it bends to "follow" into the ear canal. While these worked better I started noticing the same issue with them sliding around inside of my helmet. In addition, the LARGE outer piece would irritate after a few hours. I guess I can contribute this to my ear canal being large while the outer part of my ear is a medium. So, I've been using the other brands for a few months (the "Christmas tree" type with the string on each end and the longer tube coming out). And although I like these cheaper, more effective rubber ones the fact that the Surefire's fir so well into my ear AND have the noise-reducer, optional plug...I just had to try their foam ear plugs. I just received them today in the mail and could IMMEDIATELY tell the difference! Not only do they fit perfectly but the ambient noises are distinctly reduced, all the while being able to hear voices and other sounds without a muffled sound! I cannot say at this point how well they work while riding a motorcycle and under a helmet but I have a good feeling with these. The foam plug part feels a lot thicker than the rubber ones, thus covers my entire ear canal. I put them in the first time and did NOT have to adjust them. They just slid right in and the noise was reduced. I've pulled them out and put them back in a few times and, so far, every time they simply snug right in! These came with an extra set of foam plugs that can easily be removed from the main unit. I'll be riding tomorrow and unless they don't work any better than the EP4 and EP3's consider this review a 5-star! (If not I will edit my review.) ***UPDATE: After riding a few days with these earplugs...100% better than the EP3 and EP4! With the foam for the ear canal, these Surefire's stay in my larger ear canal! They muffle a lot of wind and engine noise, yet I can still hear my Sena radio nice and clearly! The only issue is more from my helmet, as it's a tight helmet and when I put it on it tends to slide on my ear and pull the Surefire's out. Luckily, I'm able to get a finger through the helmet padding and push them back in. VERY SATISFIED!!!
Review: Great for motorcycle riding - Got these for riding my motorcycle and they work great. These do a great job reducing wind noise when riding. Good quality as you’d expect from a Surefire product. I’ve lost other ear plugs when they came loose after removing my helmet - the main reason I got these. Since there is a cord connecting them, it substantially reduces the risk of losing them.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Do you have to use the caps for the noise reduction**
A: I don't use them too often. I leave them open so when I'm with my buddies i can hear them speak.

**Q: What's the nrr when the caps are open? i'm looking for something i can wear for home defense. i want protection but also need to hear my attacker**
A: I'm appalled by these comments, both in terms of the snarky tone and also the inaccuracy. To the OP: I suggest you not pay these comments any attention. If the individuals commenting were well-versed in their defensive training, they would know that no two situations are ever alike. Moreover, many of the commenters apparently have not considered that some people actually sleep with earplugs in (due to street noise, snoring partner, etc.), or might have multiple layers in their defense plan (e.g., partner #1 investigates the noise, partner #2 slips on the ear pro and provides support). Or maybe there's a long driveway with a security system that allows time to assess and react. The point is that everyone needs to decide what's appropriate for their own individual situation. If people are representing otherwise, it's simply posturing and unwarranted assumption.

To some of the people commenting: If you really care about 2A, and you think this is someone that needs guidance, maybe try to actually help them as opposed to flaming? The OP is asking a question about noise reduction, not for your brilliant, unsolicited advice about their home defense plan--and when you go on a tangent with a stupid, snarky, one-size-fits-all answer, it only demonstrates your ignorance of the subject. Protecting one's hearing should probably not be the primary consideration, but it *is* something to consider. In fact, one should consider everything.

In response to your question, I use the EP4s, and generally have no trouble hearing with the plugs in. The reason for this (another really basic issue that seems to have been overlooked) is that these only attenuate certain frequencies, while letting others through. The only way to know is to try them for yourself and see whether they work for you.

And one more thing--I have no idea of your experience level, but you should be highly skeptical of any advice you receive on the internet, especially when it's unsolicited. I am legitimately embarrassed by some of the comments here.

**Q: How do you know what size to get?**
A: Easiest way is to try a pair of ear bud headphones from Walmart or Target (preferably Skullcandy Brand Ear Buds because they come with different size ear plugs; Skullcandy Ear Buds (plugs) allow you to listen to music and make phone calls) (buy and return if necessary; price is about $15 per set; Skullcandy Brand Ear Buds/Headphones are awesome and have amazing sound quality for the price you pay).
Bottom Line: Ear plug should fit well when bulb of plug is inserted into ear canal (like a cork on a wine bottle). They shouldn't cause any pain/discomfort. They shouldn't fall out if you vigorously shake your head or run laps at a track (exercising).
For several years, I wore the outside the ear canal and always had to push them end over and over again because they kept falling out of my ear. One day, at the mall, a Bose Speaker salesman showed me the correct way to wear ear buds. The way I described is how you are supposed to wear them.
I'm a man, 6' 1" tall, weigh 255 lbs and wear a size 13 double wide boot. My ear bud (plug) size is a small. Don't listen to people who say small is for children and medium/large is for an adult. Medium size ear plugs won't properly fit in my ear drums.
Best of luck to everyone.
P.S. - My mother used to wear headphones like these (as a homemaker watching me and my four brothers) and it would reduce her anxiety attacks and allow her to take better naps during the day (hint, hint).

**Q: I have small ear channels, wich size is for me..**
A: The size refers to the outer part - not the part that fits into the ear canal.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great for motorcycle riding

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great all-day earplugs
*by B***N on June 9, 2021*

I mostly use these for long drives in my old cabover truck with non-existent sound deadening inside These are the comfiest ear plugs I've worn. The rubber 'hook' like bit does the most to hold these in place, so the foam itself just needs to lightly seal the ear canal itself. Less outward pressure makes these much more comfortable for long wear time vs normal foam plugs The hole in the center is great for 2 things: It makes things sound less muffled. Less like your heads between 2 pillows and more like you're listening to the world through headphones. Does a good job letting quieter sounds in while deadening loud sounds, almost like an equalizer. It greatly reduces what I can only describe as 'swamp ear'. When you wear headphones or ear plugs all day and it feels like you got water in your ear or something The only downside to those open holes is a small whistling sound when you walk. Only at walking speed, though. Driving with windows down doesn't cause it. Kind of obnoxious but really only noticable when things are relatively quiet. They are closeable, but not easily while wearing them and negates the big positives of having them there The one thing I don't really like these for is sleep. It's not that they hurt or I can't sleep with them in, but it feels like the rubber hook digs in and feels uncomfortable and tender in that spot when I wake up. I prefer regular foam ear plugs for sleep
