Forney 87808 Argon/Nitrogen Regulator Adapter, CGA 580 To CGA 320, Tank to CO2 Cylinder

I was surprised how hard it was to find this nicely made brass adapter!The CGA 580 to CGA 320, "Tank to CO2 Cylinder" has a male CGA 580 taper fitting to go to the tank. The other side is a male CGA 320 that uses a flat nylon washer to seal to a regulator.Put another way, the tank (typically argon) must have a female taper connection. The adapter will then let you use a regulator with a flat faced female connector with a nylon flat washer (typically used for CO2).One word of caution, the type of CGA connection on a tank does not *always* designate the gas. CO2 tanks and regulators, that typically use a CGA 320 connection, are also available with a CGA 580 connections. Make sure you know what gas you have.I have a medical grade Matheson CO2 two stage regulator with a male CGA 580 tank connection. My gas supplier also offers CO2 tanks with a male CGA 320 to welders -AND- high purity medical grade CO2 with male CGA 580 connectors for laboratory applications.The reason appears to be that CGA 580 connections are also used for mixed gasses. For example, welders will occasionally use mixtures of Argon and CO2 as shield gasses. That said, if you are using Argon for its ionizing properties think carefully about using any hosing or regulators contaminated with CO2 that may quench ionization.Awfully confusing...

Great product

Attached this adapter and it was significantly worse than the one it replaced. The gas escaped so loudly that I could hear a loud hiss and could feel the gas plainly on my hand like one of those liquid air containers used for dusting keyboards. I contacted the supplier asking if it was supposed to come with a washer and they indicated they are precision crafted and don't require washers, and that they've never had any complaints. I guess they don't read the amazon reviews as this is the 2nd one with the same issue.Rather than offer to replace the part, they referred me to a nylon flare washer.I would not purchase this as there are 3 or 4 other parts on Amazon that may be better. Some even come with washers.
