Alright as a kids novel, half-hearted as an illustrated novel
Quest for the Spark is not a comic or graphic novel like the classic Bone series whose continuity it follows, but a series of short books following young Tom, along with new friends and familiar faces as he tries to save the world from a new threat, this time plaguing the Dreaming and capturing the denizens of the world - including Queen Thorne - in a seemingly-unending sleep. As a book, author Sniegoski attempts to capture the Bone universe in words rather than pictures, and he succeeds as well as can be expected. Much of the humor in the comics took advantage of its medium, so text is a very different ballgame as the humor is described rather than illustrated. This doesn't bog the story down though, as it still moves a steady pace and covers all the bases admirably. Keep in mind that this is a trilogy, so you will need to buy all three books if you want the whole story.Fans of the original Bone series will be pleased to see Jeff Smith's artwork does return in this new series of stories, but their use is frustratingly sporadic, disappearing for pages at a time. There also seems to be a miscommunication between author and illustrator, as the descriptions of characters in the text (particularly the Bones) don't quite match up with the drawings. Even so, it's great to see Smith contributing as an artist even if not as a writer, as it helps bridge the original Bone comics with Quest of the Spark in a way that the prequel comic, Rose (which was written but not illustrated by Smith), sorely lacked.Quest for the Spark is geared towards kids, but can still be enjoyed by fans who grew up with the series, or came into it later in life. Not recommended if you're looking for a full-blown illustrated adventure though.

NOT a Graphic Novel!
This is a novel, as in pages of words, not a graphic novel. I haven't read it yet, so I can't comment on the writing (assuming it's good). But definitely ordered it assuming it was a graphic novel. It does have illustrations, but it's a radically different format than the Bone graphic novels. Wish that was clearer in the desciption.Less importantly, as a graphic designer I'm a little sad that they put a heavy border around every page of text, including a red line. Very tiring on the eyes and leaves the text feeling trapped. Glossy paper isn't exactly ideal for big blocks of text either, but hey...

Beware of format!
I purchased this book as a birthday gift for my son, who is deaf/autistic and has a low reading level. He has all the other Bone books--which are graphic novels--and LOVES reading them. Quest for the Spark, however, is more of a typical young adult read. While there are many pictures, there are also consecutive pages throughout the book which have only text. I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing the book; then I would have known what I was getting. He's still excited about the book and hopefully can muddle through the pages of text. But just a warning to Jeff Smith: My son says he wants to call you and tell you to write a "comic" version of this book!

Not A Comic
I didn't realize this was a written story rather a comic like the other Bone books. Once the bone cousins return from their visit in the valley (original comic story) they pretty much become famous. Though many adventurers, and townspeople are skeptical. Skipping between stories of a bone scientist/adventurer who wants to visit the valley, a boy named Tom from the valley, rat creatures, and an ex-Veni Yan warrior, the story unrolls. The book seems like it is geared torwards young adults, but still not too bad of a story. I personally wouldn't recommend this to too many adults, but If you're a bone fan like me and are willing to try anything in hope to extend the original story or add to your collection, this could be for you.

my son loves Bone books
This book is the size of a phone book, over 1300 pages! My son has read it cover to cover. He carries it back and forth to school everyday. The only disappointment, is, the pictures are black and white, not in color, like the individual books. It is among his favorite treasures.

Great novel
This book brings you back into the Bone world you all know and love. Wonderfully written by Tom Sniegoski, it's easy to read for all ages. Ignore complaints about it not being a comic book. The story works well and is a pure delight to read.

Another excellent Bone adventure!
I was so sad when the last of the 9 Bone books came out, but I hoped that some other tall tales of adventure would be forthcoming. This is definitely an excellent continuation! The story-line is interesting, the graphics are once again amazing, and I love following along with my favorite characters!!

He loves them!!!
My 12 year old grandson, who is autistic, loves this series of books. He sits & reads them from cover to cover which is rare for him to read books. He reads on the computer for the most part but he loves these stories!! Keep up the good work.

Not enough graphics
We love the characters and story lines from the original Bone series, which is why we wanted to get into this series - but miss the amazing graphics on every page. My sons are 8 and 6.5, and while the 8 year old is reading, he still loves the graphics and I don't blame him. There is only a graphic every 5-10 pages in this book, which is not quite enough for their ages. Otherwise, we love the Bone books in general.
