Q: Does it come in a box?

The only box it comes in is its shipping/packaging box. Other than that, there is no "box" it comes in. Mine arrived in perfect condition for such a big box. Totally worth the money spent if you don't have a home depot or lowes nearby.

Q: Are the wheel hubs metal or plastic?

I called the company that either sells or manufactures it and was told the hubs are metal but when I received it I studied it under a magnifying glass and light and determined the hubs are plastic.

Q: Why do the steel hand trucks have short base plates while the folding hand trucks have long base plates? Which is best?

It doesn't matter as long as you secure the load with straps or bungee cords.
